Exciting! The only other dog in my life was a roommate’s dog in grad school – a poodle named Maya. She used to snuggle with me when my roommate had a date and was out late because she hated sleeping alone!

My first puppy as an adult was one that came into the humane society I worked in. he came in with his mom and siblings at 3 days old. The first time I picked him up, he nestled into the crook of my neck and fell back to sleep, that’s how I knew he was the one for me. He was the ultimate Zen dog. I still miss him!

I had a number of dogs growing up, but the earliest one I remember was Washy, who I believe was a border collie of some type. She was a great dog, but sadly got hit by a car when I was about 7. I cried more for that dog than I did for my own father. LOL I loved that girl!

I’ve nearly always had a dog in the house … and now even have two goldies. Can’t imagine life without one, right? But growing up I was a wee little thing walking a nearly 150lb St Bernard. Yes, he was a gentle giant and what a part of the family he was!

We had a sweet little dog named “cry-baby” when I was little (I don’t know who named her!) She loved the snow and I wish I would have spent more time with her :( (julesmelfi@gmail.com)

When I was a kid, my mom helped rescue a rottweiler named Max. His owner had to leave her home due to a bad situation and couldn’t bring him with her. Back in the eighties, Women’s shelters/spousal abuse groups in Virginia could barely support the women they took in, much less kids, or dogs. My mom befriended this woman (i think they had worked at the same job at one point) and empathized with her situation. The rescue group my mom worked at were so moved by the woman’s story, they took action and decided to go get the Rottweiler from her soon-to-be-ex. My mom found this Rottweiler locked in a laundry room, neglected, no food and chewing on his own paw (nervous condition). She brought him home and he instantly bonded with my little brother. The minute he came to our house, he knew we were good people, and let us nurse his paw back to health. He gained weight, and adored us. He learned tricks, manners, and followed my little brother everywhere. He was obedient, patient, and protective of us kids… One night, someone broke into our house, and it was just my mom and us (my dad was out to sea/navy). Max jumped into action and chased a masked bad guy out of my mom’s second story bedroom window onto the roof of our Den!!!! The robber made it out of our yard before the cops came, but Max was so brave that the cops came back the next day and snapped polaroids with him.
He was such a great dog. We kept him for 2 years, till my mom’s friend got herself back on her feet. We were really happy that we helped someone get her life together and be reunited with her dog, but we were sad to see Max go. Max holds a special place in my heart, and he’s probably the reason I have a soft spot for “black and tan” dogs :)

My dog before Layla is my heart dog. Sonny, a chow mix. He was rescued when he was about 12 years old. I started to write the whole sad story of his last few months but instead I’ll just say – I was in a foreign student exchange program where I was going to go to Germany for a year after high school. I dropped out a few weeks before I left because I couldn’t bear to leave him. Ironically he did die that summer, but if I’d gone to Germany my life would’ve been in a totally different direction and I’d never have gotten Layla, meaning I never would’ve met you and a whole bunch of other nevers. He’s to thank for it all!

I have blurry memories of a few dogs when I was really little, but who I consider my first dog was Freckles, a Beagle. He lived to 14 and made me want to get into the animal care field, which I did. :)
