Before I get to the real reason for this post I have to share with you this unique patient that we had at the vets’ yesterday.
I shared it our Facebook page but I know that some of you don’t visit Facebook.
This is a Spiny Soft Shell Turtle
He was brought to us by a local nature and science center who had found him with a hook in his mouth.
He was really cool. He might of been a she but I’m not sure. I’ve never seen a soft shell turtle before and I was amazed at just how soft his shell was.
The vet took x-rays of him to see where exactly the hook was and I thought it would be cool to share the x-ray with you.
As you can see the hook is not in his mouth but further down, possibly in his esophagus. The turtle should be fine, but the vet was not able to remove the hook without surgical intervention, so the turtle was referred to a reptile specialist for further evaluation.
Pretty cool, right?
Alright now onto to the part that I need your help on.
My sister has talked me into entering some photos into a local county fair’s photography contest and I need your help on which ones to enter.
Of course I am entering into the amateur competition and I will be entering into the following categories:
1. Motion
2. Flowers
3. Animals
4. Black and White
Here’s what I have so far of what I am thinking of entering:
Motion:
Splish Splash
Can’t think of title for this one: How High Can You Go?
Flowers:
A Daisy for Gracie
Or this one: That doesn’t have a name
Or this one that also doesn’t have a name:
I can enter all 3, but I would rather enter just one.
Black and White:
Medusa. This is one of the first pictures that I took with my new camera and it will always be my favorite.
And this one of Sherman, but I think it might have to go into the manipulated images category or the misc category?
I love that his tongue is shaped like a heart. Dog equals love?
I am still going through the millions of pictures I have of the dogs to narrow down the animal category. That is tough.
So tell me what do you think? Right choices or wrong choices? Do you have any better titles for them? Should I crop more?
Be honest. Brutally honest if you must. If you don’t think I should enter any of them, tell me that too! I don’t want to be the laughing stock of the fair!
I have to print them and mat them on a single mat. I have always had good luck with Shutterfly’s photo printing, but I am open to suggestions.
Speaking of Shutterfly, they have a great Long Live Summer Photo Contest going on. Visit http://bit.ly/sweepS and upload your favorite summer photos and win awesome prizes! Each week, through 8/6/2012, they have a theme. Next week is water fun and I think I am going to upload the slip and slide pic of Bobby! Win a trip for four to The Bahamas and a professional photo shoot so you’ll remember your vacation forever. All you need to do is upload your favorite photo and caption based on the theme of the week. Get a gift from Shutterfly just for entering!

Dachshund Nola and her Mom says:
That’s a cool turtle!
I think:
Motion: Splish splash
Flower: A daisy for gracie
B&W I love the Medusa one!
Crystal says:
I don’t know about the splish splash one. It seems like a great picture for a family photo album, for sure, but not sure about in a picture contest. I love the Ibizan doing the high jump but (and this may be my computer screen rather than your picture) the edges seem a little fuzzy like the picture wasn’t totally in focus or something? I’d say try going on Flickr and finding a group that does ratings and critiques. They can be a lot of help in figuring out what is good/bad about a photo, and how to improve it. I do the Hit, Miss, Maybe, Why group, which comments with hit, miss, or maybe, and then has to add a why. Some people are more helpful than others, of course, but I really liked some of the advice I have gotten on there.
Jen says:
I was wondering about that too with the splish splash one, we’ll see.
Thanks so much for the input and for the suggestion on Flickr! That seems like a great group!
Jen says:
I just looked at Flickr and there are a lot of groups like that, which one do you like?
Crystal says:
This is the one I belong to. http://www.flickr.com/groups/himima-why/
Probably any of the groups would be great as long as they give feedback, not just a rating. If you find more groups, just look at the quality of the pictures, read the feedback in the comments, and try it out if it seems like a helpful group.
Jen says:
Thanks Crystal! I will look into that one!
Emma says:
I like the jumping dog – how high can he go, and the daisy, not sure on the black and whites.
Jen says:
Awesome! Thank you so much for your input!
2 brown dawgs says:
Poor turtle. How do you operate on a turtle’s esophagus? Love all of the pictures. You know how I feel about the white daisy. I just love that picture and the shadowing. That action picture is wonderful. They all are.
Jen says:
Very carefully:))) Actually that is why we referred him over to the specialist because I believe they will have to break his shell to get to it. It might be safer to leave it in.
Thank you for your input on the pictures!
HoundDogMom (Sherri) says:
The x-ray of the turtle was really cool, just sorry he has a fish hook inside him. I really really love the black and white picture of Sherman and his tongue. You are so correct it does look like an upside down heart. We heart your tongue, Sherman. BOL Sniffs, The HoundDogs
Jen says:
Awwww, thanks Sherri! I love Sherman’s heart shaped tongue!
Kristine says:
Motion: Splish splash
Flowers: Last pink one (pink persuasion – possible name?)
Black and White: Medusa – adorable picture
Good luck in the contest! The turtle X-ray was pretty cool.
~Kristine (the PP pepper one)
Jen says:
Thanks PP Pepper:))) Ha-that’s my new nickname for you!
caren gittleman says:
I also vote for Splish Splash
Medussa
Of the flower photos, the last one is my fave…possibly call it “Purple Perfection?”
For Sherman’s, Misc. category and I love “Dog=love” but I would use the “equal” sign
Jen says:
Awesome Caren! Thank you so much!
Jessica @ YouDidWhatWithYourWeiner says:
Poor turtle. I have never seen one with such a small head.
Good for your sister encouraging you to enter. I have thought about it from time to time but without a push I always talk myself out of it. I know you are looking for help choosing but I think you should pick the ones that make you feel something deep down. Photos that move you in some way. There will always be “good” photos but photos that move can sometimes be something a little unconventional. A) maybe it will move the judges too and B)wouldn’t it be great to know the photos you are most passionate about ARE really good?
Jen says:
His head was small, it might look a bit smaller in the picture from the angel that I tool it at.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I know which ones really move me and sometimes I just need to stick with that, but that is so hard! I am a second guesser and an over thinker!
Peggy Frezon says:
Cool turtle xray, I hope he’s okay.
Motion: Flying High or High Flying, maybe?
Flower: i like the white daisy best.
love the b&w ones. fence one maybe: Wanna kiss?
Jen says:
Thanks Peggy! and thanks for the Title suggestions! I am horrible at titles!
jan says:
As someone totally camera-phobic, I am impressed. My vote is for all of them. You never know how the judges’ minds work
Jen says:
LOL, camera-phobic? I need to hear more about that!
Robin says:
Awwww, I would love to put the one of Sherman up on the NCNC FB page! So sweet, and a beautiful picture. Let me know!
Jen says:
Thanks Robin and of course you can use it on the NCNC FB page! I would be honored!
Karen Friesecke says:
The “Medusa” picture is stunning, it’s a winner for sure. The “how High Can You Go” and the untitled flower pic are my other votes.
Jen says:
Thanks Karen! I love Medusa!
Pamela says:
I saw the turtle xray on FB but couldn’t tell what it was. It’s a very beautiful image. Hope he turtle can be treated successfully.
I’m sorry I have no great wisdom about the pictures. I love all of them. But I like Jessica’s advice to pick the one that most speaks to you.
Jen says:
Jessica’s advice rocked. I just have to shut my brain down and not think too much about it!
So are you saying that my turtle picture was not identifiable? LOL:))))))))))))))
Crystal says:
Hah, I think you should enter the turtle x-ray for the black and white photo!
Nichole says:
I think you’ve made some good choices there! As for the floral, I like the seond image. The first image is beautiful, but I think the second one is more unique for that category. I’ve been meaning to look into doing something similar for our local fair as well… guess I better look into that soon!
Jen says:
Thank you! I think you should enter your local fair’s contest. You have some great pictures!
24 Paws of Love says:
Splish Splash
Medusa
Sorry, I can’t vote on flowers, they all look the same to me. lol
Good luck!
And hope the little turtle is OK
Jen says:
Thank you! I know the flowers are tough for me too!
Jodi says:
I’m no help, I like all of the pictures.
Poor turtle, I saw the x-ray on twitter, will they be able to remove the hook?
Jen says:
LOL, thanks for all the help Jodi!
We had to send the turtle to a reptile specialist. It might be safer to keep the hook in since it does not appear to be doing any damage and removing it may do more damage than good since the shell might have to be broken to get to the area where the hook is. We’ll have to wait and see what the specialist says.
Stefanie aka Blueberry's human says:
I’m thinking Sherman belongs in the “Stalker” category. When I saw that photo I immediately thought of that song “Every Breath You Take” by the Police. lol! It’s a great pic – but definitely has stalker tones!
I love all the pics (I know – real helpful, right?) – but I love the pink flower out of all the flowers.
Medusa is great and that dog leaping that high? That’s just astounding!
Jen says:
LOL, that is hilarious! He was a little confused that I was on the other side of the fence and he couldn’t get to me!
Thank you for the help!
Jackie says:
That poor little turtle!
As for the pics, my favorites are the “Medusa” B&W (fabulous!), Sherman and his heart-shaped tongue (so cute) and the pink daisy. The petals on that one look almost 3D. Very cool!
Jen says:
Awesome! Thanks for helping me out Jackie!
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says:
Very cool x-ray but poor turtle!
Love all the photos!
My picks would be
Splish Splash, great action shot
A Daisy for Gracie, that daisy is just so happy
Medusa is fabulous
and last but not least the one of Leroy, I love how you did the BW with the pink tongue, it really pops
Jen says:
Thank you so much for your input and the kind words, you made me blush!
Pip says:
Gosh, tough choice. They are all good. I think my favorites are a Daisy for Gracie and Medusa!
Your pal, Pip
Jen says:
Thanks for the help Pip!
sprinkles says:
Honestly, I really like them all!
Jen says:
Thank you!
Mango Momma says:
I like the jumping dog for the motion photo and am loving the first black and white (too bad I don’t know how to spell medusa).
Hope that turtle will be OK. Not sure how they will go about extracting the hook, but it would be cool to watch. I bet anesthesia is tricky for a reptile.
Mango Momma
Jen says:
Thank you for the input!
yes, anesthesia is tricky for a reptile! We not sure what is going to happen, they night just chose to leave the hook in.
Novroz says:
Whoa….that was cool and scary! Did the vet take the hook out?
You have amazing photos. Good luck
Jen says:
Nope, the hook was too far down. We had to send him to reptile specialist.
Thank you!
bichonpawz says:
I especially love the Medusa one and the one of Leroy with the heart!! Awesome photos Jen! Oh….I see that it wasn’t Leroy with the hook…it was the turtle!! Got it!
Jen says:
LOL! Thanks Jeanne! If Leroy would of swallowed a hook you would of heard me screaming where you are!
