Dog Shaming, Is It a Crime?

Dog Shaming is all the rage these days and personally I find their photos quite amusing. They make me laugh. They make me feel not alone in this world. They turn my frown upside down.

It wasn’t until I read Pamela’s post from Something Wagging This Way Comes on Wednesday, that I realized that not all people find these photos amusing. Actually,  some people find this Dog Shaming thing quite offensive.

I understand that their are some people in this world that may take Dog Shaming too far, you’ll have that with anything, but for the most part I think it’s just harmless fun that we are sharing our pets shame with the world.

Gracie could not physically be featured here because she seriously has no idea that Leroy ate her favorite blankie 2 years ago. I actually had no idea until I found it in a pile of dog poop.

From what I have viewed on the site, and I haven’t seen all the shaming,  I don’t think anyone is putting their dog in harms way. I mean do you really think that the owners of the dog that ate their credit cards, put their credit cards in his food bowl and told him to have at it?

Now the dog who steals pacifiers is a little weird, but who am I to judge?

All in all I think it’s just harmless fun, but I do wish they would come up with a Guinea Pig Shaming because I could have a ton of fun with that too!

So tell me, how do you feel about Dog Shaming? Does it offend you? Has it gone to far?

****No dogs or guinea pigs were harmed during this shaming episode and I tried to keep it non-offensive because I love ya, but just so you know Sherman really wanted to write swear words on his paper.

Woof! Woof! My mom is guilty of posting my latest shameful behavior. http://www.sugarthegoldenretriever.com/2012/08/what-ive-done-was-shameful/
She did it in a different manner but it’s all for FUN to share. We saw many posts on FB where not everyone is not so happy about posting pet shameful behaviors. As I said it is just for FUN :-) Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

lol! Guinea Pig shaming is adorable!

As I commented on Pamela’s post, I think Dog Shaming is hilarious and I submitted Alma to it (yet to see her come up on the site, though).

I highly doubt anyone is setting their dogs up or putting them in harm’s way for the sake of shame – it’s all in good fun, and laughs fellow dog owners can share with one another. Those taking it too seriously need to lighten up, and see it for the surface amusement it’s intended to be.

Ha-ha! I can’t wait to see Alma! I think they are backlogged on submissions, maybe I’ll see ours by Christmas!

I find dog shaming hysterical especially as I can relate to it SO much and most of it is just people who adore their dogs sharing the silly & funny ( ok and sometimes annoying and naughty ) things they do. I did try to get a shot of Missi with a piece of paper that say I like to poop behind the sofa and hide it………….. but she ate the bit of paper.
I think your boys and Piggle do not look in the least bit ashamed just like Missi didn’t……………….lol

LOL that she ate the paper! Sherman kept drooling on his paper and making the marker run!

This is interesting. As you mentioned earlier about typos…again, my blog is basically about making fun of something or someone whether it’s me or Puddles…or the neighbors. It’s just for shits and grins. I don’t want my blog to be serious, I want it to be fun and entertaining. I am not a perfect dog parent, human parent, and my dogs will never be perfect. That being said, I would however, never do something intentionally to bring them in harms way. Puddles is just a naturally goofy dog so she is entertaining and makes for good blog material…but so do I;)
But back to the actual site, it’s like this…some are funny and some aren’t…just like Puddles antics.

Allison….I hope some of this made sense

LOL! I loved that you did pics with all your pets. Gibbey was hilarious!
Personally? I thought the pics were hilarious. In most cases the dogs are just laying there and not feeling shamed. I think what makes the picture is what is on the piece of paper lying in front of them.

I think some people should lighten up.
Sometimes fun can just be fun, not a teaching moment.

Thanks Mel! I think the paper makes it funny too, you have to have an active imagination I guess;) I would never think something was funny if it but a dog in harms way, I don’t anyone would, right?

My husband and I laughed like fools when we went through that site last weekend! I don’t find it offensive. Sometimes using humor is the best way to get through those trying dog moments. Heck, I bet a lot of people would like to take kid shaming pictures, too, but that would be frowned upon! Seriously, I think it’s all in good fun.

Honestly I find the site funny but I can see how people would be upset or find it offensive.

I think you are onto something with this Guinea Pig Shaming – although I’m sure every single entry would be “I pooped on my owner” :)

At first I thought it was funny, but then I saw a few that were pretty aggressive in tone and language and that’s when I thought of the people who just take it too far by emailing the people who took the pictures thinking that it’s real.

But like you said, there are always going to be people who take it to far.

I think it would be fun to try it with our dogs, but I’m a marshmallow. and would only do fun stuff

I’m one of the ones who doesn’t like it. While I haven’t viewed the site, I can only imagine how some people in their quest for fame will take it too far.

Besides, we all know they don’t have a sense of shame anyway! :-) That being said, Delilah’s picture would have the “I ate poop and then threw it up on the carpet” slogan in front of her.

I really hope Gracie doesn’t see this post. =) I think the dog shaming things are funny – it’s not like the dogs understand that you’re telling on them. As long as no one is hurting their pet, I guess I don’t see the harm.

I think it can be taken too far as well. And yes, some of them are humorous – but it’s not really my cup of tea.

Although I have to say – I liked all of yours – they were in good fun. Maybe it’s just that after reading your blog I know you are a real dog lover and have a great sense of humor without being cruel to your dogs.

Before I read Pamela’s post, I thought it was just harmless fun as well. In fact, my husband and I came up with a great caption for the cat, if we ever get around to sharing it. But I do understand why some people could be wary of anything that puts animals in a negative light. I don’t think that is what is necessarily going on here but I see how it can be construed that way. I like to think that most people who takes the time to share photos of their pets on the internet in this way are probably people who love them.

I found the ones I have seen so far as funny. Dogs can’t read and therefore are not hurt or upset by a note. I would hope it is kept on the light humor as it was meant to be. My Lexie probably would pull off the paper and shred it into a pile (they know not to eat paper) on the floor for me to throw away :)

I guess I am behind the times. I have not heard of it, but I think it is funny and a great way to share our pet’s foibles with others. I think sometimes pet owners who have a pet that does something wrong feel like they are all alone and a bad pet parent. That site is an great way to let them know they are not!

PS I wish it was actually effective to change pet behavior. I could put Thunder’s picture up there. It would say: “I did my first clean land triple and then refused to give up the last duck!”

  • Pamela says:

I’m so amused by how pet shaming has taken on a life of its own. After reading all the comments on my blog I’ve decided that those of us who worry about it a bit are the pessimists and the people who enjoy a little bit of harmless fun with it are optimists.

We pessimists are the people who see American’s Funniest Home Videos and say, “OMD, I can’t believe those people set up their grandmother that way. She could have drowned!” And the optimists say, “OMD, it’s hilarious that happened while the cameras were rolling. So glad grandma didn’t get hurt.” :)

Either way, rotten people will find to make the most harmless thing rotten and the majority of decent people will just have a good time. I’m glad people are having fun.
