Monday Mischief. Halloween Masks Gone Wrong

I had a vision last week when I bought these masks for Sherman and Leroy.

I had seen a picture of a dog on Facebook wearing a mask kind of similar to the ones I have pictured above. It was an awesome picture and I wanted to recreate it with the Newfs. I mean how difficult can putting a mask on a dog be, right?

Well putting a mask on a dog is the easy part.

Getting them to cooperate and look at you is the difficult part.

My thought on the gold mask was that with the right lighting from the sun and Leroy’s beautiful light brown eyes the gold of the mask would set off the gold sparkle in his eyes.

However, one would have to have his eyes open for that sparkle to shine through.

I suppose Leroy thought this mask was intended to assist in his afternoon nap.

And Sherman didn’t fair much better with his mask either.

He looked more like an alien that had lost his way.

The red was picked for Sherman because red is his color and his eyes are a bit darker than Leroy’s so the red with the gold trim would of accented his eyes.

However, one would have to direct his eyes upwards instead of downwards for that to happen.

Now I could of photo edited some eyes into these pictures, but there isn’t a “Newfoundland eye” button for that, and if you have ever looked into the eyes of a Newfoundland you will know that their soulful eyes can’t be edited.

Which is why I most likely will not subject them to masks again.

Another lesson learned.

I’m impressed you even got the masks on them!! Not sure I would have worn one – and then posing for the photos – it was a big ask – but A for effort!! I’m sure the end result would have been great :)

    Wags to all

    Your pal Snoopy :)

Thanks Hawk! I bet you would look great in a Mardis Gras mask-especially with your beautiful eyes!

      October 8, 2012 at 11:06 pm
  • Kristine says:

Awe, they look cute. You could also use the masks for a Mardi Gras backyard parade! They could pull the float and the kids could throw beads. :p

    October 8, 2012 at 7:17 am
    • Jen says:

Thanks Kristine! Wow! Now that is a really great idea! Why couldn’t I of thought of that!

Awww!!! What a shame! I know exactly the picture you were speaking of and I would have loved to have seen Leroy and Sherman in a picture like that. No chance of trying it again at all?
Their eyes are so soulful. Can you imagine if they looked up?

    October 8, 2012 at 7:41 am
    • Jen says:

Did you see that picture too? That’s what the gave me the idea! I guess this is why I am not a professional photographer!
I might try it again with Leroy, Sherman is a no go. I can’t get anything to look good on Sherman!

Though we can’t see their soulful eyes clearly, they still look super cute! I’m sure they tried their very best to please their mommy during the photo shooting sessions as well.

    October 8, 2012 at 8:50 am
    • Jen says:

Thanks! Sherman tried but I don’t think Leroy gave me 100% effort, but that’s ok, he is very tolerant with me!

  • emma says:

If you are desperate, you can use a tripod and take several pics that are “exactly” the same and then with windows live photo program you can put the eyes from one on the one with the mask. It is not too hard to do. Mom had to switch heads on a family Christmas photo last year because the kids did not cooperate – youtube has videos on how to do it.

    • Jen says:

Ha-ha! How do I deal with the drool? It’s a part of my life now, it’s comes with the territory. I just wipe and move on:))

  • Flea says:

I’m thinking maybe the masks are too small. They look tiny on Newfie faces. Maybe you can make your own, a little larger, with larger eye holes?

    October 8, 2012 at 12:25 pm
    • Jen says:

I think your right! The fit better when I didn’t tie them. I am in no way cut out to make my own, crafty I am not but thanks for the suggestion!

      October 8, 2012 at 11:18 pm
  • Gracie says:

I think the red of Sherman’s mask is accenting his tongue! LOLOL but they look sooooo cute!

  • houndstooth says:

Ha ha ha ha ha! I suppose now is not the time to mention how much I enjoy putting masks on Bunny for pictures. It does require a certain amount of patience, though…

    October 8, 2012 at 12:55 pm
    • Jen says:

I know! How do get that to happen so great? You have to teach me! Patience is not something I have though:))

It was a good idea, but turned out a bit scary. I take it that is not what you were going for? lol Not sure I could even get a mask on my doggies let alone have them sit still long enough for a picture. In that sense, I would say it was a success!

    October 8, 2012 at 2:49 pm

I thought they looked pretty good in their masks. I do the same thing and envision things one way and have it not materialize at all as planned.

  • Taryn says:

Funny! Dogs really do NOT enjoy anything placed on their heads or faces, do they? I have struggled with the same issues and more often than not, all I get are long suffering expressions!

  • Kimberly, The Fur Mom says:

Very impressive that you were able to get a mask on your pup. I can’t figure out where the strap is supposed to go on their face.

    October 9, 2012 at 10:22 am
  • Tylersat99 says:

Surprised you got the masks on! Mica and Lexie will tolerate the costumes and hats (difficult) but not a mask in any way. Was trying to prefit parts of costume today, Mica was tolerating my testing her hat Lexie was not going to deal with it.
