Leroy Goes To The Vet

Since I work at a vet clinic, Sherman and Leroy go to the vets more than your average pet.  Sometimes on a slow day, they go with me just to hang out. Other times they go because a quick exam by the vet is warranted because I am an over concerned owner, and sometimes it’s just because they need a well visit and to have their vaccines updated.

Tuesday Leroy needed the latter because he was overdue on some of his vaccines.

To be honest, he was overdue on all his vaccines, by about two months.

I know, I know. You don’t have to put me on a guilt trip I did plenty of that to myself. I know how I missed it. Instead of his vaccine reminders being mailed to my home like they are to all clients, Leroy’s were placed behind my time card at work where they stayed for two months. That’s right, I’m blaming the office manager who put them there. The red warning dots next to his vaccine records had nothing to do with it.

As soon as I realized that Leroy was past due I brought him in the next day.

He was due for the works. Distemper, Lepto, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccine, and yes he got all of them, at once. Besides being a little mentally challenged, Leroy is a young, healthy dog and he can handle all the vaccines at once. I’m not at all concerned about over vaccinating him and he’s never had an allergic reaction. He gets his Distemper combo vaccine every 3 years, his Rabies vaccine every 3 years, Bordetella and Lepto once a year. So every 3 years he will get them all at once and when he gets older I may run vaccine titers on him,  but for now, these are the vaccines he needs to protect himself.

(Those are the vaccines that Leroy needs. What your dog needs may be different. Some people don’t vaccinate for Leptospirosis because they live in an area where Lepto is not prevalent. I live in area where cases of Lepto have been verified. Some states require the Rabies vaccine to be given yearly. The state of Ohio requires it every 3 years.)

Before his vaccines could be given the vet did a full physical exam and everything checked out good except for his ears, which has been an ongoing issue that we have been battling this year.

It’s funny for me to watch Leroy at the vet because he is a totally different dog there. No silliness, just business.

If every dog that came to the vet was like him I would be out of a job because he just stands there and lets the vet due her job. Even when she checked his prostate, he took it like a dog.

Another part of his visit was a weight check. It’s extemley important to me to monitor both of the Newfs weight. On this day, Leroy weighed in at 149 pounds, which is up 4 pounds from his last weight check, which is good because I was trying to put a little weight on him. Not because bigger is better, but because 149 pounds is a better weight for Leroy’s frame. I try to keep the Newfs on the light side but at 144 pounds he seemed a little scrawny. The vet agreed and said she thought that now he is at the perfect body weight, and believe me she would have no problem telling me if he was fat.

So overall a good visit, except for the ears. We are trying to come up with a game plan for those. Possibly a new medication, maybe a food trial to eliminate a food allergy. It’s to be determined.

Glad it all went well. I was at the vets today to get my stitches checked out. I was pretty good till they stuck the thermometer up my bum - not impressed by that BOL

My mom usually takes me to the vet half a year for vaccinations and check-up. I don't mind going there as long as the vet offers me some treats.
