A few months back I mentioned a poetry contest that is being held by Pets Add Life.

The 5th Annual Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest is open to children in grades 3rd-8th and seeing that Bobby is in 5th grade and has recently gotten his very first pet I thought it might be something that he would enjoy doing.

There are some great prizes that kids can win for the contest including a $1,000 scholarship for each winning student’s classroom.

While the scholarship would be awesome, I thought this was more of an opportunity for Bobby to work on his writing skills and put into words how he feels about Gibby.

After a few rough drafts, even though I’m bias, I think he did a pretty good job and I’d like to share the poem that he submitted to the contest with you:

 

 

Gibby the guinea pig is my very first pet.

I have loved him from the very first day that we met.

He makes me smile when he wiggles his little black nose
and I laugh out loud when he nibbles on my toes.

I always run to see him when I get home from school
and all my friends think that Gibby is super cool.

It’s a lot of hard work to care for a pet

but having Gibby in my life is as good as it gets!

Not bad for a first timer, right?
