I don’t make a habit of tossing or throwing food to my dogs.

Normally the only thing I will toss to them is a toy, and I’m normally standing about one foot in front of them and I gently toss it into their mouth.

Sherman can catch these tosses of toys.

Leroy can not.

Never could and probably never will. He lacks coordination and focus.

I will, on certain occasions, throw something AT Leroy.

The occasions being are when I’m trying to take a nap on the couch and Leroy is sitting on the other couch barking out the window at every leaf that flies by.

The object I throw is normally the Nerf football that is laying on the floor beside me, or the pillow and once I threw my flip flop at him, which ended badly because he started to eat it.

I never throw anything AT Sherman.

One does not throw things AT an angel.

So anyway, we rarely toss or throw anything to the dogs, which is why it was quite odd that my husband decided, the other night, to toss them tater tots that were leftover from dinner.

I was standing right there when he did it and I remembered thinking in my  head that this wasn’t going to end pretty.

Big dogs just can’t catch little objects, especially little food objects.

At least my bog dogs can’t.

Well this time wasn’t going to be any different and not surprisingly Sherman missed his tater tot when it was tossed to him. It hit his nose and landed in front of him and he ate it.

Leroy’s tarter tot missing wasn’t so uneventful.

Leroy’s tot hit his forehead and bounced up on the counter and then bounced under the kitchen table and then under the refrigerator.

In his quest to catch the tot his tail knocked over my pop on the counter spilling it directly into my purse. He took out 3 kitchen chairs and flipped the kitchen table and then the tot went under the refrigerator,

Just so you know, determined big dogs chasing after a tater tot can move a fridge.

I kept hearing the song of the little meatball on top of spaghetti, just replace the poor meatball with poor tater tot and instead of the meatball being mush the tater tot was covered in dog hair.

Lesson learned.

Sherman and Leroy are unable to catch tater tots and Leroy can move refrigerators.

  1. Well that sounds eventful! When I was a kid, our dogs were always good at catching stuff. They were shelties. I just thought it was something all dogs did. Then I tried to throw something to my grandpa’s Sheltie and he couldn’t catch it which I just thought was the weirdest thing! I’ve met many other dogs now who can’t catch stuff either.

  2. Hi Y’all!

Have you ever rolled on the floor while laughing hysterically? I’m BOL ’cause that’s what my Human is doing after reading your post! Now I’ve got to read it so I know what’s so hysterical!

    Y’all come by now,

  3. Bwa ha ha! Now I know who I should have called when I needed help moving a file cabinet. A few well placed tater tots…

I DO toss food at Honey. It’s a wonderful way to teach her that she gets treats if she remains on her bed at the other end of the kitchen instead of poking around my legs when I’m using a knife.

I recently shot some video of my husband tossing Honey treats. He does it by spitting chunks of food into the air so she can catch it. It’s quite a show.

  4. Oh my gosh Jen, we had such a big laugh at this one. I could picture it all in my mind! I hope nothing was ruined in your purse! That is some good Monday mischief.

  5. Never a dull moment with Leroy. You’re lucky Sherman is such an angel – can you imagine two Leroys? Jack can only catch if he’s sitting about 3 feet from me and I very deliberately toss it lightly to him. Maggie probably could catch it, but is to afraid to eat anything she doesn’t smell first. Sally & Tino were both expert catchers, fly ball to the outfield run & jump catchers.

  6. Haha! This made me literally LOL in the elevator this morning!
Alma is actually quite good at catching food/toys, but Moses is downright terrible at it. He’ll let it bounce off his face and then eat it off the floor. And he seems okay with that.
So I’m just picturing his lack of coordination with tater tots (and Leroy’s excitement), and it’s hilarious!

  7. OMD, that is so funny. Sounds like a scene from one of those Beethoven movies. Rita’s a terrible catcher too (I posted a video once of her “pancake-catching fail”) – she just lets stuff bounce off her head, then picks it up. But we’ve never had epic chaos from it. Your poor purse!

  8. The sausages can’t catch anything, either. Well, every so often Austin will manage a catch. We’ve never had a miss go quite so crazy as Leroy’s miss, though. Your description was so funny… but I was so hoping for a disaster shot – the flipped over table and chairs, all the mess! But I don’t blame you for no pic!

  9. Ma was really chucklin’ readin’ this, cause she thought such things only happened to her!
Yes, this also happens to Ma when she tries to throw things to me…I have terrible mouth-eye coordination! Ma usually kicks toys to me, cause I get too excited tryin’ to catch balls and toys and stuffs that I usually end up knockin’ stuffs over and breakin’ things. Yups, Lessons learned.
Now, I hopes Leroy finally gots that tot…

  10. LOL! I’m going to have that meatball song stuck in my head now. Maya isn’t good at catching things either. Pierson is pretty adept at it, even in the dark. (I was giving him treats when I took him out for potty while my neighbors were shooting fireworks on the 4th. I have a fenced yard so there was no concern about him running off, but I gave him treats in order to distract him from the noise.)

  12. Too funny – same thing happened with a french fry and Pip. I tossed him a fry, it fell right in front of him …it took him a few minutes to even find it. The impact of the fry hitting his nose must have confused him. LOL!
