Welcome to Slobber Week!
Yes that it is correct, Slobber Week!
Some people have Shark Week and we have Slobber Week, which leads up to National Slobber Appreciation Day on November 16th! It started off as a joke but now it just might become an annual event that is fun and educational.
Before we get silly with slobber this week I thought I would take the time to have some serious talk about slobber first.
I understand that there are a vast number of people who do not appreciate slobber in any shape or form and that is all good. I appreciate that and hopefully that is why you have a dog that does not slobber and I would never try to sway you otherwise.
I have Newfoundlands and most Newfoundlands slobber.
Obviously, if you’ve been to my blog before you already know that.
But do you know why Newfoundlands slobber?
Newfoundlands slobber because of the way that their mouths are formed.
Their mouths are formed differently and hang down more than the average dog, and the reason they do this is so that they can breathe when they have something in their mouth while they are swimming. Say, something like your arm, because you are drowning and your Newf is rescuing you.
Some Newfies slobber more than others.
Sherman totally slobbers more than Leroy, but his lips are a lot looser too, so he would be the one I would want to save me if I was drowning. Leroy might get a mouth full of water and let go of me. Not might. He totally would.
Do all Newfoundlands slobber? I would have to say that most, at some point, do.
Settle down. I said most. I’m sure there are some Newfie’s out there that don’t slobber, but with that being said, there is NO SUCH THING AS A DRY MOUTH NEWFOUNDLAND.
If someone, meaning a breeder, tells you or advertises that they have dry mouthed Newfoundlands: BACK AWAY SLOWLY. They are probably the same ones that claim they have Newfoundlands that don’t shed.
If you want a dog that does not slobber DO NOT GET A NEWFOUNDLAND. Don’t even look for one. You probably don’t want to look for a St. Bernard, Mastiff, Bull Mastiff, English Bulldog, Bloodhound, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, or Basset Hound either, and watch out for those cute Labs, Goldens and some mixed breed dogs. I’ve seen a few that can wrap slobber around their nose.
Alright, now that the important “educational” slobber things are out of the way we can focus on more fun things for the rest of the week, like how we clean slobber off the walls, what we call slobber other than slobber, a special master slobber-er who has a birthday this week and of course loads and loads of slobbery pictures. Which reminds me, if you have a slobber picture that you would like me to share please send it my way. You can share it on our Facebook page, you can tweet about it using #owntheslobber or you can email it to me at mybrownnewfies@aol.com.

What a great idea to dedicate a whole week to slobber :) My Lab mix drools a ton! He drools more than any other dog I know, but it does look like your dogs have him beat! I don't mind the slobber at all. I think it's cute :)

Well it sure sounds like the slobber is for a good cause! I'd like Sherman to rescue me too, I was getting a little scared when I couldn't touch the bottom in the pool the other day! :)
Mum used to have Goldens and they could do the whole flick the slobber onto your nose trick too, though they only slobbered on walks and when there was food around :)
I have no clue about slobbering as I've never done it, I guess you know from that and my lack of swimming not to count on me when you're in trouble in the pool! :)
Wags to all,
Your pal Snoopy :)

Jen, I never knew the reason behind the large mouth, carrying something and breathing. Makes so much sense. Thanks for the education. My sister has Mastiff's and I'm sending her this blog post to read. Cute photos too!

Funny *and* educational. I love it. My bro's mastiff is a master slobberer too. I'll have to see if I have a photo of him in action. (I probably deleted all the really slobbery ones...) Can't wait to hear what else you call slobber!

Mastiff's are real time slobbers! I got slobbered on by one at a show and it was hilarious!
I hope you can find a picture!
