An Apple A Day Helps Keep The Veterinarian Away

_DSC01251

Apples are packed full of goodness and can be a super healthy treats for dogs but they seem to be a hit or miss treat around here with Sherman and Leroy.

They seem to love dog treats with apples in them but just plain old apple slices seem to lack in the drool worthy treat category.

Leroy spits them across the floor and Sherman takes an apple slice, lays down with it and stares at it waiting for it to transform into something better.

Luckily for Sherman, last week his waiting was over and his plain old apple slice was transformed into something magical.

Apple slices dipped in peanut butter and sprinkled with coconut chips.

A super healthy snack packed with protein, fiber, calcium and vitamins A & E and simply irresistible for most picky dogs who aren’t fond of plain old apple slices.

The dogs love these so much that we now have a designated snack time almost everyday and as soon as they hear me slicing the apples they come running.

I split a whole apple with the dogs (they each get 3 slices and I get the rest) and I always make sure there are no seeds in the apple as these can potentially be harmful to dogs if bitten and ingested. I used DogsButter and organic coconut chips as the magical topping.

What a great idea! Luke will eat just about any fruit or veggie given to him, but I don't think we've tried apples yet (I tend to only have them in the house when they're in season here). But the girls are like your boys are....they'll either turn away or just stare at it...any fruit or veggie. So mixing them with things is the only way to go. But this sounds easier than having to put everything in the food processor with yogurt and make frozen treats!

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for sharing your idea! Easy to prepare and affordable snack for dogs (and humans too) :-) This is something that both of us can share while watching tv. Looking forward for more snack tips from you!

This made me laugh. The part about one spitting them across the floor and the other staring and waiting for them to transform into something delicious. My guys are the exact opposite.... I have a bunch of shelties who would think your dogs were crazy and would scarf up those apple slices as fast as you could cut them for them! My babies love apples and any and all other fruits and vegetables that they are allowed to have!
