Before We Go Any Further You Should Know These 5 Things About Me And My Dogs

_DSC03091

I’ve been writing this blog for a long time.

About 5 years to be exact.

During that time readers have come and gone and some have stayed on for the duration. Thanks for that and the things in this post will be nothing that you probably don’t know about me so we are good.

For the rest of you that have come aboard we should talk before we move into the next year. There’s things that perhaps I haven’t made clear over the last year or three and I don’t want anyone to say that they are here under false pretenses.

I want you here because you want to be here, despite it all.

It’s about to get real people.

1. Sherman and Leroy come from a responsible breeder. It’s crazy but it’s true. I bought them with money and they weren’t cheap. I even signed a contract. According to some people, who live in a delusional world, 500 dogs died because I bought my dogs so in essence I am a dog killer. Huh. Interesting. Bite me delusional people. And by delusional I mean PETA, not our friends in rescue. 😉

2. Sherman and Leroy are/were show dogs. Otherwise known as beauty pageant dogs who don’t really get to live the normal life of a dog. Both boys have finished and are now enjoying retirement. Well, technically, Leroy was suppose to show in the Veteran Class next year but he went and got himself all messed up…so now he’s officially retired.  I am such a selfish bitch to put my dogs through such a rough life. Damn me.

3. Sherman and Leroy are both intact male dogs. See #2 for the main reason. It’s not that I don’t believe in spaying and neutering, I totally do, but I also believe in responsible pet ownership.  I’m fully aware of the health risks involved in keeping my boys intact and I would never, ever tell anyone NOT to spay or neuter their pet. I also don’t allow my dogs to wander off and impregnate the bitches in the neighborhood. Leroy’s not interested in bitches anyway. And by bitches I mean female dogs not biatches.

4. I fully believe in vaccination. For my kids and my dogs. Perhaps it’s because I’ve seen puppies and dogs die from Parvo. I know the Parvo smell.  I’ve assisted in cutting the head off of a dog so it could be sent for Rabies testing, or because I’ve cleaned the kennel of a dog that had leptosporosis. Don’t get me wrong, I also believe that dogs can be over vaccinated and that it all depends on what the dog may or may not be exposed to in his life. Different strokes for different folks. I personally talk to my vet about it. That’s person who knows what is going on in our area and what my dogs may or may not be exposed to. I don’t listen to online magazines who live across the country and try to imply that my vet wants to kill my dog through vaccines. Seriously. Who comes up with this shit? Damn me and my real life experiences.

5. I feed my dog’s a commercial dog food. I know. OMG. Wait. You haven’t heard the worst of it yet. I feed Leroy a prescription diet from one of those big named pet food companies. Holy shit. I’m the devil. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against home cooked or raw fed diets. More power to y’all. I’ve actually considered making the switch a few times but I’d rather make my vet rich and buy the prescription food from the company that pays him a ton of money to promote it.  Seriously. You guys know that vets really don’t make a dime off of that food, right? The mark up is pretty low and I highly doubt the vet sees more than a penny or two. Not to mention one of the foods Leroy is on my vet doesn’t even carry so I get it from Chewy.com which means my vet isn’t making a cent off of it.  Dogdamn vet just wants my dog to live. That bastard.

So now that we have all that out in the open and you see where I stand and I’m probably for everything that your against:

Do you still wanna hang out in 2015?

If not…… that’s cool.

If so, awesome.

Let’s do this.

And if you feel you need to come clean about a few things before the New Year starts-have at it in the comment section. Don’t worry, you’re among friends. 🙂

Edited to add-I’m not trying to be a total asshole in this post but I am being real which I think we need more of in 2015. In 2015 don’t be afraid to be real and stand up for what you believe. Make educated decisions. It’s not a one size fits all world.

This is the sort of post that I love to read. It's blunt, it's honest, and it's real. I love every word of it. I couldn't think of a better send off at the end either - I hope we, as people in the pet blogging world, get the guts to write articles like this. And as far as buying dogs from decent breeders I want to say hallelujah. It's a shame that people who are excellent dog owners feel the need to leave out where there dog came from in fear of being condemned for not adopting from a shelter. People get dogs for many different reasons; I don't know why this is a concept people don't understand or ask about. I find bred working dogs & show dogs fascinating - it's a world I don't know much about. The little I do has shown me how much dedication goes into preserving the well being of that specific breed which is admirable in my mind. Great post, and I hope we all start to get more honest this year. If there's one thing I love reading it's something open and honest.

Thanks so much for the kind words Jen. I feel that sometimes we shy away from posts like this because some of us see some backlash in these areas. I've had backlash in the past. I've gotten offended but now I feel that it is what is and I'm not going to hide from it. Was I nervous to publish this post? Absolutely. But I'm so happy I did :)

Well I guess I can add a couple of items to your list because all apply to us except the RX food. We had an intact female along with the intact males....shudders. She had pups (not with either of our males). I know. Right. But the biggie....we have hunting dogs and they actually go out and retrieve shot birds! Just getting real...lol.

Happy New Year to you. How can Leroy almost be ready for Veterans? Am I in a crazy time warp?

I'm horrified right now :) Lol. Just kidding! I know how awesome you are!

Leroy will be 7 this year, in June. Time has flown. It seems like just yesterday he was having blow out diarrhea outside the ring in Detroit. ;)

ME TOO! Change Newfie to German Shepherd and finished to can't seem to get past reserve and it could be MY post. Thanks for speaking up for us kibble feeding, free-balling, regularly vaccinating, breeder supporting dog owners.

P.S. I LOVE my breeder. Over the past few years we have become dear friends.

Haha. Free-balling love it!

That's so great that you and your breeder have become dear friends! Love it when that happens!
