Dogs Can’t Talk, But Their DNA Can. Why Not Help Them Out With The Wisdom Panel 3.0

_DSC0791

We do genetic testing on our human babies to ensure they are as healthy as possible, but what about our dogs?

Since I wanted a purebred Newfoundland I was able to do my research and find out what health issues they are commonly predisposed to. Going a step further, before I made the commitment to a specific line of Newfoundland, I was able to weed through traits that I wanted and those that I wanted to avoid and I was able to do that because of genetic testing that was performed throughout the line. Did it give me perfect dogs? No. But it gave me as close to perfection as records could allow me to see.

Knowing your dog’s genetics can let you know what health issues to lookout for. It can even help you develop an appropriate diet and exercise plan for your dog so he or she can live their happiest and healthiest life.

If you have a mixed breed dog, have you ever wondered what breed your dog actually is? Knowing specific breed information can be a huge help when it comes to the proper nutrition, training and overall healthcare of your pet. Plus, understanding the breeds that make up your dog enables targeted care and in some cases provides lifesaving information.

Wisdom Panel Post (1).docxMars Veterinary, the industry leader in canine genetic testing, just released their next evolution of the canine DNA test—Wisdom Panel® 3.0— which not only expands the breed screening coverage, but the medical applications as well with the new MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening.

Why is the MDR1 screening important? Dogs with the MDR1-mutation may have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs, so it is important to test mixed-breed (and purebreds with the high-propensity breeds) dogs and for owners to share results with their veterinarian so they can provide the dog with the best possible care. That is HUGE because there are some very common drugs and breeds that are affected by the MDR1 mutation.

For more information on breeds and drugs affected by the MDR1 mutation, visit Wisdom Panel’s MDRI screening page.

The canine DNA test is so simple to use it can even be performed at home. Swab your dog’s gum line for 15 seconds then send your test in to the lab for quick results. You’ll get the results a few weeks later. To make things even easier for you, the cost of shipping in your swab is included in the price of the kit. Kits can be purchased 24/7 at Wisdom Panel’s site.

When you send in your swab, your dog’s DNA information is checked against a growing database of DNA information (over 10,000 samples). The Wisdom Panel test now covers over 250 breeds (including mixes), in addition to some medical screenings.

That is awesome.

A DNA test isn’t a guarantee that the unexpected won’t happen. It can’t tell you all that the future holds for your dog but it can give you some general ideas of what to be on the look for and allow you to better prepare.

I’ve never personally used this DNA test but I asked around and found that several people have and were very satisfied with the results.

p.s. Let’s keep in mind that most responsible breeders should have this information available BUT for mixed breed dogs or purebred dogs where a breeder can not be found this seems like a viable option for dog owners.

I have always been curious about what breeds have "fallen in love" to produce my dogs. This may prove interesting.

I wonder if 'scoundrel' comes through the DNA on pure bred pups. Just wondering out loud, not really casting dispersions on a certain Standard Poodle mind you. :)

I'd heard of DNA testing dogs, and thought what a wonderful idea it would be for pet parents with a mixed breed/mongrel!

I love the idea of being about to learn more about our dogs. I know both of my guys are purebred, but many pet owners will benefit from this product.

I agree. If I didn't have the records that I do for the boys or if I had a mixed breed dog I would be all over it! I think It's great the response I have gotten back from people who have tried it! Seems most are happy with it!
