The One Dog Odor That I’m Noseblind To But My House Guests Are Not #Petiquette

This post is sponsored by Febreze ™ and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about #Petiquette but My Brown Newfies only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Febreze is not responsible for the content of this article.

Over the years my nose has been trained to detect certain dog odors. Dog poop, dog vomit, dog urine are just a few of the odors I’m trained to smell. The training goes back to years working in the veterinary filed and of course having dogs of my own my entire life. Dog poop is probably my keenest scent that my nose has. It’s even been known to detect diarrhea over solid poop. Seriously, my nose has been that good at times. It has to be. The quicker diarrhea is detected the least likely it is to spread all over your house.

The one dog odor that I’ve become noseblind to over the years is wet dog.

Sherman nor Leroy care if they are wet. Leroy would lay in the rain for hours if I would let him and Sherman would take up residence in the biggest snow pile if he could.

I just don’t smell it anymore.

And this can be a problem.

Especially this time of the year when wet dogs are a common occurrence with the wet conditions that Fall and Winter bring to Ohio AND the fact that we always have guests coming and going from our house on any given day.

Don’t get me wrong, our friends love us no matter what. They know that when they come into our home they risk the chances of getting covered in slobber and covered in dog hair. I love that they know that and still come over so if I can make their time with us more pleasant and smelling fresher even with 300 pounds of wet. slobbering, furry dogs surrounding them, I’m good with that.

 Febreze School Of Petiquette

This is why Leroy and I decided to go to the Febreze™ School Of Petiquette to learn how we can make the smell of our home a bit more welcoming for guests this holiday season. (Sherman had a prior engagement to attend a slobber etiquette course at another school in the area)

SchoolCrest2Here’s what we learned at school for our specific noseblindness to wet dog odor:

  • When Jake’s got to go, he’s got to go! Even if it’s pouring rain and you have guests arriving at any moment. After he comes in from the rain, give your kitchen and areas where guests will gather a few sprays of Febreze Air Effects to eliminate the soggy smell of wet dog and leave behind a light, fresh scent.  Super easy!

Here’s our own personal Febreze Petiquette tip for wet dog odor in unexpected situations.

  • When ^that^ sits on my couch when he’s wet and my husband’s boss comes over for an unannounced visit.  Don’t panic.

  • SchoolCrest2A towel and a few sprays of Febreze Fabric Refresher works great on couches! It leaves a nice fresh scent so your guest doesn’t know they are sitting in the same spot that a 170 pound wet dog was just laying on 😉 It’s a win all the way around!

Here’s some  more cool things that we learned at the Febreze School of Petiquette:

  • While we love our furry friends, we can become noseblind to their odors, potentially making for an awkward, stinky experience for house guests. Febreze is a pet owner’s other best friend because it doesn’t mask but truly eliminates pet odors and leaves behind a light, fresh scent. According to a recent survey, pet odor is top of mind (and nose), even ranking above smoke odors in terms of offensive smells in the home. In fact, the majority (60 percent) of pet owners say that they would hate if their guests thought their homes smelled of animals.
  • Fabric Refresher works great to instantly remove odors from fabrics. Use daily on fabrics that get a lot of high traffic and odors (dog beds, furniture). Start off every day by freshening those fabrics.
  •  Air Effects instantly takes care of the odors in your air. Use it anywhere and anytime pet odors are lingering or when you need a burst of freshness. Great to use in any room, and especially great to store readily available in rooms like the kitchen and bathroom where odors pop up frequently and you quickly want to eliminate them.
  •  Car Vent Clips continuously freshens your car and eliminate the tough pet odors that tend to hang inside your car. Place onto any air vent in your vehicle, set the intensity dial to begin releasing the level of scent of your choice, and replace every 30 days to constantly freshen and eliminate odors in your car.

So tell me, what dog odor are you noseblind to? Do you worry about that when guest come to your house? What do you use to remove the smell?

I bet those big ol' bear of a dogs do get quite stinky. I know my little Chi sure does. Nothing Febreze can't handle though.

Ahh yes, ode de wet dog, a familiar scent in our home too! It's especially nice with a generous addition of mud in it. Excellent information & tips to keep one's home guest ready. We need to take some Febreze Petiquette courses too! Love & Biscuits, Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them

on the other side of it... I believe it works by fooling the brain. It doesn't somehow clean the air. I am chemically sensitive and not alone in that. Be sure to warn guests that you've used fabreeze products or you could have a quick doctor's visit on your hands. It makes me that sick. When we go to hotels we ask them ahead of time and ask maids later not to use this. LeeAnna

I have four of the least stinky dogs except for bodily functions, of course, but I have a bottle of Febreeze conveniently located in case someone lets me know they're coming over. If anyone just drops in they get to experience the real us.
