TSC Helps Us Give To Rescues That Care For Giant Breed Dogs

Giant breed dogs are not for everyone. Most of us know that but sometimes people find out the hard way. Perhaps they didn’t do their research on a specific breed. Perhaps they didn’t really know how BIG the LARGE breed dog that they were taking home was going to get. And sometimes, circumstances beyond someone’s control, happens.

Whatever the case may be, giant breed dogs end up in shelters more than any of us would like. While any dog that is in a shelter is a sad situation a giant breed dog in a shelter can be double sad. Often times shelters or rescues may not take in giant breed dogs due to limited space, limited funds and unfortunately, limited demand.

Giant breed dogs in general can be more expensive than an average dog. Add in a giant breed dog that has been neglected or abused and you’ve tripled that expense. An expense that some shelters just can’t afford to take on.

Fortunately there are some rescues that are devoted to care for giant breed dogs in need.

One such rescue is called Gentle Ben’s Giant Breed Rescue  in Pennsylvania.

Gentle Ben’s Giant Breed Rescue is a non-profit, 501 C(3) large breed dog rescue whose primary concern is to give abandoned dogs who end up in shelters or are needing to be re-homed by a family due to divorce, loss of job, illness, etc. a chance to find a new loving family.

I learned about Gentle Ben’s a few months ago from a friend. They do amazing work and often they have giant breed dogs such as Newfoundlands, Great Pyrenees, Mastiffs and St. Bernards just to name few.

If you’re not familiar with them please take some time to visit their page and read some of their success stories. And if you are looking to donate to a rescue or shelter this holiday season, please consider Gentle Ben’s. They have recently taken in a dog named Gillian who’s story is incredibly sad. She was rescued from South Korea, from a dog meat farm, and has a list of medical conditions that are quite costly, including a recent finding that she has no bladder.

I can only imagine how much time, love and cost goes into running such an amazing organization so when I was chosen to do a post for Tractor Supply Co®  that allowed me to create a $100 gift basket for a rescue/shelter this holiday season I knew exactly who that rescue would be.

Since I’ve shopped at Tractor Supply Company before I was confident they would have everything I would need to create my gift basket for Gentle Ben’s Giant Breed Rescue.

I had to think giant breed dogs so what was top on my list was joint support. I hoped that the rest would just come to me as I searched the dog aisles.

I was surprised to see that they had expanded their dog food line since the last time I was there. They have a HUGE selection of food, including their own new brand, called 4Health®.  4Health is a premium-quality cat and dog food, exclusively made for TSC in the USA with high-quality and grain-free formulas available.

They also have a nice selection of health and well- being products, including Vetricyn and Cosequin. I’m a HUGE fan of the Vetricyn wound and skin care product so I was happy to see that the full line was offered at TSC and I noted it in one of the file cabinets of my brain for future use.

As I was browsing through the isles I also noticed that TSC now carries Dog For Dog® products.  For every purchase, Dog For Dog will donate to a shelter. Sherman is a big fan of DogsButter and it’s what we use to stuff his carrot with all the time!

After going up and down the aisles at least a dozen times I made my picks.

Our gift basket, well it’s really a gift bowl, includes a 10 qt giant stainless steel water bowl, a bottle of Cosequin, 4Health joint dog treats,  DogsButter, Dog For Dog peanut butter treats and a large crate mat.

The reason why I chose each item:

  • One can never have too many stainless steel water bowls, especially a giant one for multiple giant dogs.
  • Joint supplements are expensive and giant breeds need extra joint care. Cosequin is a common joint supplement that is often recommended by veterinarians.
  • Joint treats-see above.
  • Every dog needs a little bit of peanut butter in their life and Dog For Dog gives back to dogs in need!
  • Large crate mats aren’t cheap and giant breeds need a comfortable place to rest those giant joints. They can also help dogs that are suffering from pressure sores, a common condition seen in large breed dogs.

So our gift bowl might not look like a lot but I think it’s perfect for giant breeds.

Our gift bowl is being sent out to Gentle Ben’s Giant Breed Rescue tomorrow along with a personalized note. I hope they like it and can put the items to good use! (Don’t tell them we’re sending it. It’s a surprise!)

Did you know that on a local level, TSC makes their stores available for rescue groups/organizations to host adoption events and fundraisers? They also provide low-cost, walk-in clinics through PetVet Clinics. Visit right HERE for a list of those clinics.

Wow. Tractor Supply isn’t your average farm store!

I’d like to thank TSC for this wonderful opportunity to give back to rescue groups this holiday season. With 2 giant breed dogs here we are always on a tight budget and wish we could give more to those in need at this time of the year. Tractor Supply made that possible for us to do!

p.s. That little John Deere tractor in the first picture was bought by my dad 10 years ago for Bobby at our local Tractor Supply store! 🙂

I can only imagine how much more expensive it is for a shelter that specifically works with the giant breeds. I know that they were very grateful for your donation. I LOVE your tractor!

Yep. Whenever I see a giant breed in rescue that requires a lot of care I can't help but add up the cost in my head of what it is to care for them. It's normally triple the cost of an average size dog and there are a lot of giant breeds that I'm sure come in with conditions that will need to be treated for life.
