Waiting On Dog Poop

Waiting On Dog Poop

I had an extremely exciting weekend of waiting for my dog to poop.

But before I share the events of last week I will let you know that the outcome was a nice solid poop.

So last Monday Leroy broke with diarrhea. Anytime he has diarrhea I get a little nervous and this time was no exception,  except this time I was big time nervous as I watched what was coming out of his back end several times that day.

I immediately put in place our diarrhea protocol.

I withheld food for 24 hours and then started with a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice.

Tuesday I waited for the results but Leroy didn’t produce any which I thought was a good thing until Wednesday morning when he woke me up to go outside and what he produced  outside was the opposite of good results from being on a bland diet.

My heart sank immediately and I thought the worst.

This was the worst diarrhea that he’s had in years and the fact that his protein levels were dropping had me a nervous wreck.

I put a call into the vet early that afternoon.

At first they gave me an appointment  10 days away because Leroy’s vet was booked solid.

I reluctantly accepted the appointment. I needed to see the vet who has been treating Leroy the last 3 years and not someone else. I don’t trust anyone else.

Thankfully the receptionist heard the worry in my voice,  looked up Leroy’s history and was able to squeeze us in early Friday morning.

The next 2 days were hell.

Leroy was still eating but everything was going right through him. You could tell he was uncomfortable and I swore he was having a relapse. I was terrified.

When we got to the vet Friday morning I was so nervous. I was even more nervous when Leroy stepped on the scale and was down another 2 pounds.

The vet came in and we talked a little bit and he took Leroy back for some tests.

I knew we were going to have to check his protein to see how far it had dropped. Steriods were imminent.

About 1/2 an hour later he came back.

Good news was that Leroy’s gram stain showed an overgrowth of bad bacteria. More good news was that Leroy’s protein levels were actually up from last time. The fact that they were up suggested to the vet that this was not related to his IBD but more of colitis.

Perhaps from something he ate.

I’ve never been more happy to hear that my dog had colitis.

Compared to an IBD flare up, it’s a pretty easy fix with some Metronidazole and a bland diet.

How Leroy got it is beyond me.  Since it’s an overgrowth of bad bacteria,  I guess it could of been a few things when I think about it.

  • The recent walks we’ve taken in the parks. I’m usually pretty careful but I guess there’s a chance that he ate some rabbit poop or something.
  • We had some standing water in a wheelbarrow in the yard and I noticed the dogs around it last week. He could of taken a drink out of that.
  • I started giving him bone broth a few weeks. It could of been that.

Of course I 100% blame myself but I’m just glad it’s fixable.

So I immediately started Leroy on the medication Friday and waited.

His appetite never ceased but all of a sudden his pooping did.

I just need to see a solid poop so I can go about my weekend.  I need to know that everything is firming up in there.

Friday came and went.

Nothing.

Saturday came and went.

Nothing.

Finally,  late Sunday afternoon, it happened.

One big solid poop.

The weekend was almost over but finally, I could relax.

Finally my yard could see solid, cleanable poop again.

p.s Thanks to everyone for the well wishes for Leroy! I tell ‘ya…….this dog……

I'm curious why you think bone broth might be a culprit. It is generally known to be pretty soothing to the gut, which is why a lot of people drink soup when they have issues.

I also wanted to comment that I love the image with this post. Those stuffies are adorable.

Hi Connie,

Good question and that's exactly the reason why I started giving it to him! I believe it may have been a culprit because of the high fat and protein. I think it was just too much for him. He's suppose to be a very low fat/low protein diet because of his IBD and IL.

Thanks for the kind words!

My gosh this is so funny and concerning at the same time! I know people who don't own a dog find it's funny that we fuss over what our pup's poop looks like. I own a Chihuahua, and one day or two with stomach problems could be a serious matter for him. So.... I feel so glad knowing your Leroy is better.

Thank you! It definitely is one of those "dog people" things! Ha!

Soooo glad Leroy is doing better! Glad you're feeling better, too! Until Jana's FB post today, I wasn't aware of these potential side effects. Both my girls have been on it long-term for their IBS but thankfully have not had reactions to it. Still, I think it's time for a discussion with the vet.

Thank you! Yeah I would definitely talk to your vet, I was surprised that your girls have been on it long term. We only use it for flare ups or things like this, but I'm sure your vet has a good reason! Hugs to the girls!

That is so weird. Blueberry had a similar incident last week that finally resolved itself this week. She seldom gets the 'rrhea and when she does, it's never been for more than one or two poops. I think Taryn is onto something with a weird bug going around.

Oh no! I'm glad that Blueberry is doing better! You are right, this is getting weird with more and more people saying their dogs have gotten this! Maybe it is some weird bug going around!
