When A Newfoundland Dog Meets A Miniature Horse

A few weeks ago I took Leroy out to my sister’s house. My sister has a small hobby farm filled with chicken, goats, sheep, alpacas and miniature horses.

Leroy’s been out there several times before and he’s really never showed any interest in the animals.

I remember when my sister first got her chickens. They’re free range so the were running all around the yard and I was nervous to take Leroy off his leash because I knew for sure that he would eat one.

My sister had more faith in him than me and reached over and unhooked his leash and I said, “Fine. But I’m not liable if he eats one.” Just as I said that three chickens scurried right in front of Leroy and he didn’t bat an eye.

It was at that moment that I realized Leroy lacked any type of prey drive.

It doesn’t seem that he’s phased by any animal actually.

He would much rather walk around and eat goat poop than interact.

On this day a goat walked right up to him and Leroy just looked at the goat like, “Waz up?” and shrugged his shoulders.

The miniature horses were more interested with him than he was of them.

I guess that could be because Leroy has spent most of life being compared to a miniature horse.

So being right next to one wasn’t that big of a deal.

And as you can see, there really isn’t much difference in height.

I don’t think that the horses really knew what to make of him though.

“Is this that new hybrid horse that all the farm animals have been talking about?”

“It certainly doesn’t smell like a horse.”

“It doesn’t sound like a horse.”

“But it has straw all over him like a barn animal.”

“Where’s the hooves?”

Pretty soon curiosity got the best of most of the farm animals as they strutted over to check Leroy out.

Leroy wasn’t phased at all.

It was almost like he had lived there all his life.

Makes me wonder if he should of been a farm dog rather than a city dog.

Leroy's just cool like that! LOL

I doubt anything bigger than Shadow would phase her very much. She'd probably think it was just an upright acting goofy. Ducky, on the other hand, would probably lose her wicked little mind. ?

That's not a bad trait actually. I have one like Leroy and one who is shall we say, just a "titch" more interested in critters like squirrels, birds and fleeing cats. My shoulder can prove it, too. ;)

Ouch! I hear you on that! Sherman has pulled my shoulder almost out of the socket a few times due to critter alerts!

I love the last photo of all the animals staring at Leroy! That is so funny. My boys would have barked themselves hoarse.

I hear ya! Sherman isn't a fan of the farm. I think I've only taken him out there once and it was just too much for him

It's always fun when they get to see other animals - just to see how they interact. Our Monty can't be trusted around horses. Even though we own them.... Sigh...

It is fun! Based on past experiences I don't think that Sherman would do well either, especially with the chickens.
