I try my best to provide Sherman and Leroy with a comfortable life. They have a roof over their head, a place to sleep every night, full bowels of food everyday, walks, treats, toys and of course, an exuberant amount of belly rubs.

Some would say that they are pampered, I would say that they are loved beyond words.

Unfortunately, there are pets out there that haven’t had the chance to feel that love or they are experiencing hard times.

We know how it feels to fall on hard times, we’ve been there, that’s why we’re excited to help spread the word about a very BIG philanthropic effort to help pets in need launched by PetSmart® this week.

Help PetSmart Help Pets In Need. Buy a Bag, Give a Meal

On Monday, PetSmart announced the launch of its new “Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™” program, where for every bag of dog or cat food purchased online and at all its 1,500-plus stores across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, the leading pet specialty retailer will donate a meal to a pet in need.

What makes this program so big is that it runs March 1-Dec. 31, 2017! It’s not for 1 day, 1 week or even 1 month. It’s for the rest of the year!

In PetSmart’s recent press release,  it states that they expect to donate more than 60 million meals.

You guys, that’s a lot of meals!

The meals are going to ALL pets in need. Pets in shelters and pets that rely on food from food banks and pantries.

According to David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, up to 7 million pets enter shelters every year across North America. While these pets await adoption and their forever homes, they need access to pet food, making pet food a significant operating expense for animal welfare organizations. According to a recent PetSmart Charities survey involving nearly 1,800 of its animal welfare partners across North America, only 20 percent of these organizations receive pet food donations and about 8 percent are on contract with pet food brands to receive subsidized pet food.

Haworth also noted that not all pets in need live at shelters and many are with their families, who are served by food banks and pantries. According to some national food banks, it is estimated that one in seven Americans rely on these facilities. Pet food is a rare offering in human food bank programs and is not an eligible item for purchase through most food assistance programs. As a result some families in need often sacrifice their own food, feeding their beloved pets human food to ensure they have something to eat.

Double Up! If you don’t buy food at PetSmart, that’s o.k.You can still buy a bag of food, donate it to your local shelter or food bank and still have a bowl of food donated. This is what I’m going to do since PetSmart doesn’t carry the food I feed Sherman and Leroy and I’m going to feel good doing it!

PetSmart carries a wide range of dog and cat food brands and its Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program includes all brands and sizes of dog and cat food bags purchased at the 1,500-plus PetSmart stores, as well as online at PetSmart.com and PetSmart.ca. Nonprofit partner PetSmart Charities® plans to collaborate with national nonprofits to help effectively distribute the pet food directly to pets in need.

Buying a bag to donate is such a good idea! I always donate on the keypad at checkout since my kitty was adopted through PetSmart charities, but he and Barley and Rye all eat food that isn't carried at PetSmart so I was sad I wouldn't be able to participate in this campaign. Now I can! Thanks for the great suggestion.

Isn't it such a great program?! I love that it goes through the end of the year and it's not just a week or month long!
