What Happens When A Bassett Hound Puppy Meets A Newfoundland?

The short answer to that question is nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing exciting.

Nothing fun.

And definitely nothing that you were expecting.

On with my uninteresting story:

For those who don’t follow us on social media, my sister recently got a Bassett Hound puppy. His name is Potsie and he’s the cutest little puppy with the longest ears that go on for days.

I met Potsie 2 weeks ago and I set up a play date for him to come and meet Sherman and Leroy last week.

I was SO excited for the them to meet.

Sherman’s not that fond of other dogs but I knew he would be ok with a tiny puppy due to his nanny dog tendencies.

Leroy is a dog that loves all dogs but mostly dogs that are smaller than him. He always wants to play with little dogs but they never want to play with him so I thought a puppy would be good for him.

I couldn’t have been more wrong in my thoughts.

The day Potsie came over, I decided to introduce the boys separately to him.

Leroy was chilling downstairs so Sherman was up first.

Seeing as I wasn’t ready with my camera, Sherman and Potsie’s meeting went better than expected.

Potsie was a little intimated by Sherman’s size and slobber but Sherman was all up in Potsie’s business and was super excited to meet him. Potsie wouldn’t get too close to Sherman and would take the longest route possible to get by him but there was one time that he curled up on Sherman’s tail.

I got ZERO pictures of that interaction taking place.

Since Sherman was a little worked up and needed some time to chill out, Leroy and Potsie met outside in the backyard.

At first Leroy followed Potsie around the backyard as he explored but then suddenly, Leroy changed his mind and wanted absolutely nothing to do with the puppy.

He wouldn’t even look at him.

I spent over 2 hours trying to get an adorable picture of these two and Leroy just wasn’t having it.

I went through a whole bag of Grandma Lucy cranberry treats and there may have been a lot of talk about a certain dog growing a set of balls.

Things just kept going down hill from there and I almost got a really cute picture of Potsie and his ears but my sister stuck her hand in the picture. Sigh.

Then I also almost had the epic “Bassett puppy eating a flooger from a dog’s mouth” but my sister ruined that too when she pinched and flung the flooger across the yard so poor Potsie had to try to eat it off the ground.

I was able to snag this adorable picture of my dad holding Potsie like a baby.

I don’t know what it was about the puppy that Leroy wasn’t sure of. He surprised me with being so stand-offish but after searching around it seems that it’s common for older dogs to feel this way about puppies.

We’ll try to get the two together again soon but in the meantime I’m wondering if Leroy needs a permanent puppy in his life STAT.

We had both bassetts and Newf's. The bassetts would swim vs what the books say they don't. Torpedo's in the water. Most adult dogs will avoid puppies as they have the oder of their mother and it is protective warning for others to stay away.

I too hate it when my guess is so far off the radar and the Boys make me feel foolish for assuming I know what they're gonna do in certain situations. Cute puppy!

My Abby loves small dogs and puppies. But my. It Ryder avoids them. Maybe its an adult, male dog thing?

Never ceases to amaze me how much I think I know my dogs, and how they will interact in certain situations. I'm so wrong sometimes.

My sweet but very timid pointer cross can sometimes be really snarky to little dogs that she meets on one day but totally in love the next. Whereas by fear aggressive + other issues cattle x kelpie can be a total sweetheart one day with pups and then totally disinterested the next.

Shows the importance of taking charge of the situation like you mentioned in your post, introducing them at different times etc.

Great read.

Cheers, Mat
