If Carpet Stains Could Talk

*This post is sponsored by Flooring America. All opinions expressed here are mine and mine only.

When we first purchased our home 18 years ago the majority of the rooms were carpeted.  We had cream carpet upstairs in the family room, beige carpet in the front room, light pink carpet in our bedroom and light grey carpet in the basement.

Between muddy paws and potty training the cream carpet in the family room lasted only 2 years and was quickly replaced with laminate flooring. The bedroom and front room, which weren’t as often traveled by the Newfs, lasted about another year and was eventually replaced with more carpet.

The basement carpet was quickly replaced with laminate flooring the day after my dad let Leroy out of his crate after he had explosive diarrhea inside of it. There was no coming back from that.

As of today our house now has two rooms that are carpeted. Both are in need of being replaced because they’re dirty and have stains that no cleaner was able to lift.

The funny thing about those stains is that there’s a story behind each one of them.

There’s the stain in the front room where Sherman lays every night to eat his late evening snack. Every single night he takes his treat to his spot and enjoys it to the last bite.

There’s a dark stain where the tile in the foyer meets the carpet. That’s where Sherman rests his head as he waits for the kids to return home from school.

The stain were Leroy vomited up something god awful brown-orange and I spent 4 hours trying to clean it up. Why do dogs always puke on the carpet? There’s 7 other rooms without carpet in our house that he could puke in but he choses the one with carpet every single time.

The stain of red wine that happened when I tried to step over Sherman and he stood up and I spilled my glass. Don’t move. Thanks for that.

A small blood stain when Leroy broke my nose. Put you head back! Don’t look down! OMG!

Those stains are memories.

Gross and painful memories, but still memories.

However, the time has come to replace that carpet and we are left with making the decision to keep it carpeted or to install laminate flooring.

It’s a tough decision.

I understand that carpet is harder to maintain when you have a Newfoundland due to the hair, dander, slobber and dirt, but it’s also easier for them to get traction on. Having two senior Newfs, that’s important to me. The front room is the room that we do “indoor play” in. We toss the ball, we play catch and tackle the puzzle toys in there. I don’t want to stop playing in there because I’m afraid that they’ll slip and get injured.

Of course there’s always throw rugs and such but I’m thinking carpet would just be easier in the long run.

Carpet isn’t like how it was back in the old days.

Pet owners have options now. I’ve seen many carpets that now have some sort of pet protection and I think that’s awesome.

While the kids are mostly done spilling their drinks, I’ll always have a Newf in my house so I’ve been keeping my eye on STAINMASTERS PetProtect Carpet that our local Flooring America store has.

Here’s a list of 5 great things that it this carpet has to offer to pet owners:

1.  IT RESISTS PET STAINS – you’ll love it because, with built-in stain resistance, you can worry about other things (and your pet will love it because he won’t get into trouble if he has an accident!).

2.  IT RELEASES PET HAIR – you’ll love it because you can spend less time vacuuming; PetProtect carpeting releases more pet hair when vacuumed.

3.  IT REDUCES PET ODOR – you’ll love it because the STAINMASTER PetProtect carpet system helps keep pet accidents from soaking through the cushion and subfloor, reducing odors when thoroughly cleaned.

4.  IT PROTECTS AGAINS FADING – you’ll love it because PetProtect carpets offer the best available protection against carpet color fading.

5.  IT STAYS NEWER-LOOKING FOR LONGER – you’ll love it because with this stain-resistant carpet’s unsurpassed durability, the mad dash of paws isn’t a big deal.

If that’s not enough, Flooring America will make a donation to Pets for Patriots — improving the lives of veterans and companion pets — and YOU can save up to $500 off on select styles of pet-friendly, kid-friendly STAINMASTER carpeting during Flooring America’s Fall Into Savings Event.

This is the sample that I’m thinking of going with for the front room. What do you guys think?

Is it too light? I think it looks lighter in the picture. I’m nervous.

Thanks for this information . I am thinking of carpeting our house but was a bit hesitant since we have two dogs. After reading your article I am leaning towards carpet installation.

I am always a carpet girl. It's easier for the pets (and more comfortable for them to lay on) and I love how plush carpet is to walk on. I figure that's why they have carpets cleaners. I love the color you picked!

I agree! Love walking on pluch carpet in bare feet!!! Our boys hardly ever lay on the carpet. Cold tile is their favorite-even though I wish they would lay on something a little softer!

First of all I told you we recently replaced the family room carpet and that's where we all stay. We had a tan oatmeal look before and replaced with the same tan color. It is stain resistant and so far everything has come right up. The thing we changed was the type of padding. It has a vinal like top on the padding that keeps everything from soaking through. We are very happy with it and from the picture of yours it's about the same color.

Thank for sharing your experience! I will have to look into that vinyl top!

I wish we could afford to re-carpet the house! Callie’s chemo-induced accidents 2 years ago left permanent, ugly stains. Stains that only the two of us can “appreciate” as stories. Oh well. One day - maybe - when we win Powerball or MegaMillions....

I hear ya. We've been putting off the new carpet for a few years now. It can quite expensive when you add in the padding and everything!
