8 Fun Fall Activities To Do With Your Newfoundland

Fun Fall activities to do with your Newfoundland

Here in Ohio Fall is a little late showing up. We’ve had a few cooler days but it seems like I’ve been running my air conditioner more than usual this late in the season. A rule of thumb that I like to use in this house that is if the air conditioner is running nonstop, this means that it’s a little too warm to go for a hike.

The warmer than normal temperature for this time of the year are putting a minor damper on some of the fall activities that I’ve been waiting to do with Leroy and Odin but as soon as that crisp cool fall air hits we’ll be able to tackle some of our favorite fall activities.

Here’s a list of some activities that you and your Newfoundland might enjoy this season!

Newfoundland dog out for a hike in the fall

Go for a hike.

Fall hiking with Leroy is by far one of my favorite activities to do with him.

We love to hit the local parks and take in all the beautiful scenery.

This is the time of year that I dust off Leroy’s backpack and put it to good use. Using a backpack on a dog has many advantages such as giving them a job to do, focusing their attention and giving them a greater workout than just walking alone.

Bob for apples.

In the summer we bob for ice cubes but in the fall we switch things up and add some frozen apples into the bucket.

We can do this activity on any day, whether it’s warm or cool AND the boys are getting a nice healthy snack!

This a great activity to do with a senior Newfoundlands too!

Dress it up.

Some people may not be interested in putting their dogs in costumes and some dogs may not be comfortable wearing a costume, but for Leroy and I it has always been a fun tradition.

I have fun coming up the idea and executing it. It’s not easy finding costumes for giant breed dogs so 1/2 the fun is thinking of something that will work for them!

As far as Leroy has shown me, he enjoys the dressing up part. I always like to plan a day of it. We’ll start off with doing a photoshoot and then Leroy is handsomely rewarded with several other fall activities like going for a hike and stopping to get a special treat.

I think he’s old enough now that he knows that if he sits patiently, the reward at the end is well worth it. Sherman’s never been a fan of dressing up so except for a maybe a hat, tie or bib, he doesn’t get a costume. Check out some fun costume ideas that you can do with your dog from Wag Wear Repeat.

Go for a getaway.

Fall is a great time for a getaway in a cabin or tent. The cooler temperatures and beautiful views make it a perfect time of the year to get away with your Newf. If you plan on traveling up to New England make sure to check out Dog Mountain and the Dog Chapel with your dog!

Pull a cart.

Newfoundlands are working dogs and one of the jobs that they are known for is draft work.

Draft work is a dog pulling a cart and fall is the perfect time of the year to introduce your Newfoundland to this activity! It’s recommended that a Newfoundland be at least 18-24 months years of age before they pull weight. You can make a cart yourself or purchase a pre-made one.

Before you begin any type of draft work it’s important to read up on it or talk to someone that you know that is familiar with the sport. You’ll need a special harness and cart and many hours of training but seeing your dog pull a cart is a very rewarding experience!

Leroy and Sherman used to help us haul wood from the backyard to the front yard in preparation winter. Check our Dog Works for more info!

I’ll be introducing Odin to the Siwash harness in October.

Go for ice cream or a puppuccino.

Ice cream might seem more like a summer treat but for us, ice cream is a fun all year round treat.

I don’t like to drive with the boys much in the summer with the heat so fall is a great time for me to load up the boy and go do something special.

Visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard.

I’ve never done with one of my boys because I have this feeling like Leroy would try to pee on every pumpkin that he could until he was all dried up.

However, I’ve known many people who do take their dogs to pumpkin patches and it looks like so much fun!

I would make sure to call ahead to the patch or orchard that your planning to visit to see what their pet policy is. If you’re lucky enough to bring your dog with you I would make sure that your show dog courtesy and to clean up after your dog.

People watch.

Even though Leroy can’t do some of the fall activities that Odin can right now, I still want to make sure that he had his special outings.

One of our favorite things to do is going to get ice cream and then go to our local park and sit on the bench and just people watch.

This also gives Leroy the chance to interact with people and most of the time we make a stranger smile.

Another activity that is good for senior Newfoundlands!

Decorate Pumpkins.

Nothing says fall more than a Newfie themed pumpkin and we had so much fun making our spooky diorama and Newfie stenciled pumpkin last year!

Most Michaels craft stores have their fall decor on sale right now it’s the perfect time to grab one and get crafty.

I have to grab another one this year so that I can make one for Odin!

Cook up some festive fall treats. Pumpkin is the taste of fall and since it’s a healthy treat you can bake up a special batch for your puppers! There’s this great grain-free peanut-butter and pumpkin recipe, candy corn frozen treats and no-bake pumpkin and oat treats.

So tell us, what are some fall activities that you plan on doing with your dog this year?
