8 Things Most Newfie Owners Can Relate To In The Spring

Spring is about to sprout here.

You know how I can tell? My tulips started to peek out on Tuesday and were put to death on Friday by 6 inches of snow.

Also, my floors are covered in muddy paw prints.

That’s why I think as Newfie owners, and as owners of dog, we need to make a pact right now.

Clean floors are overrated. Who needs ’em? We wear slippers around the to keep our feet dry from dog slobber anyways.

Our socks aren’t going to dirty because they never actually touch the floor so who cares if the floors are covered in muddy paw prints?

Who cares? Not us.

We need to all come together on this and not stress about the floors the Spring. We’re not going to wash them more than once a day. Heck, we’re not even going to wash them daily. I know that’s scary but we HAVE to do it.

Let’s grow up right now and forget about the floors being muddy?

If you do it, I’ll do it.

Every spring I think to myself, “It’s not going to be so bad. Maybe the snow will just nicely melt and the yard will dry up all in one day. Two days tops.”

That never happens.

Let’s just admit right know that Spring, which comes every year and is welcomed, is going to be messy and muddy.

Here’s 8 things that most Newfie owners can relate to in spring.

Clean floors are overrated. Our main topic. You can wipe a Newfie’s paws in the spring all you want but you will never get all the mud and water out of them. It’s impossible. Your floors are covered in towels and throw rugs to help absorb some of the mud but it’s never enough. Face it, you’re not going to see clean floors until July when we’re in a drought.

There is not enough towels. There is not enough towels in the world to dry off a Newfie that has been laying in a Spring snow for hours. For those of you not familiar with what spring snow is, it’s much heavier and wetter than winter snow. Usually spring snow sets on top of a ground that has gotten 6 inches of rain and then 6 inches of snow on top of that all in one day. When a Newfie lays on that all the heavy wet snow it is absorbed into their coat. It’s like a sponge and it doesn’t towel dry.

There is no dog product in this world that will clean a Newfie’s muddy paw. All these products that are “said” to clean muddy paws usally aren’t big enough for a giant paw or the they just don’t have the absorbency power.  You need a big bucket, a hose or you need to get creative and make your own dog paw washing station.

Wet dog smell. There’s no candle or room spray that is going to cover up that wet dog permaneltey. It’s on your dog, in your carpet and on your furniture for the next several months. Your house is going to smell like mud, wet dog and dirty snow.

Back brace. Lifting 4, 8, 12 or 16 Newfie paws several times a day to wipe them off is a workout and a back problem waiting to happen., especially if the said Newfie’s leg all of sudden refuses to be lifted. Gimmie the damn paw! I’ve been known to do a few stretaches before I dive into wiping off 8 Newfie paws and the older I get the more I think about investing in a good back brace to get me through spring. Remember, lift with your knees and not with your back.

Is it Fall or is it Spring? I don’t know because my dog keeps bringing in every single leaf that I missed.

Dryer vent maintenance. Am I the only one who has to send their husband up on the roof to clean out the dryer vent once a month because it’s clogged with lint from dog towels? So many loads of muddy towels to wash!

Loss of matching furniture. What color is my couch? I don’t know because all my couches are covered in sheets to protect it from mud and clumps of dog hair from coats blowing. I’ll know what color it is in late June or maybe I’ll need to buy new couches. It’s anyone’s guess.

I’m not complaining. I know this is coming, you know this is coming. We’re just giving ourselves a pep talk and making a Newfie pact. We’ll get through this together

p.s. Our northern friends might be able to relate more to this than our southern friends. I’m not sure what type of spring you have down South but many of you had more snow this winter than normal.

Clean house with a newfie? I say impossible! Samson is our second newfie and we learned from Kong that may as well stop dreaming for a clean, spotless house :) Newfies fit in with our lifestyle though because we've never cared that much about the super clean home, inside or out. I think if you're going to own a newfie its best to realize that the love and friendship we get from our newfs, make up for all the rest.

Hilarious post, as always Jen, and no less hilarious comments! Giggled and laughed all the way, especially when you said you weren’t sure about spring or fall because of all missed leaves in the house!! But as funny as it is, I can so relate to this post even though I have labs who are two times smaller than newfies! My couch is also of unknown color because it has been washed so many times, and now it’s getting some holes in it too-Bear chosen it as his back scratch tool from day 1, and nothing can change it! Carpets, rugs -too! I own tons of equipment to keep the house clean with no much success! And we bearly ever have snow! So... I’m joining the pact- seems to be the only solution!?

You don’t know how glad It made me to see this post! I just told my husband that I was trying to decide if the vacuum or a rake would be more effective to get the leaves, sticks and dried mud clods off the floor. Sometimes Moses comes in looking like he’s wearing a Ghillie suit!

Shadow's no where near as big as Sherman or Leroy, but she does manage to bring leaves and twigs and godonlyknowswhat from the yard in her feathering every time we come back inside. And it doesn't matter if we're out there 5 minutes, 55 minutes, or any other number of minutes. And when she blows her coat, I pick up dozens of hair bunnies from the kitchen floor. But actually clean the floor? Once per season, no more/no less. Hubby says he's gonna vacuum tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it.

Yes! It doesn't matter how long they are out! Our next big obstacle will be the stringy oak tree things that fall in late Spring. Oy Vey!

Now that's a pact I don't mind entering into! You're on-no more cleaning the floors...until... ?
