Ending National Pet Dental Health Month With A Bonus For You And Your Dog!

DSC_07171

Hopefully we all know by now that February has been designated as National Pet Dental Health Month. It’s a whole month where the AVMA and several other veterinary groups address the significance of oral care for pets in a variety of ways.

According to studies done by AAHA (The American Animal Hospital Association), approximately 85% of cats and dogs over the age of 3 have some sort of periodontal or dental disease.

Just like people, pets accumulate plaque on a daily basis.

“Plaque is composed of 90% microscopic bacteria that, over time, harden and become tartar or calculus. These bacteria and tartar can lead to gingivitis (gum inflammation), which is the body’s response to the unhealthy bacteria.”

“When the gum tissue is unhealthy, it often progresses to periodontal disease, which causes bone loss at the root of the tooth and then tooth loss.”

“Regular teeth brushing at home can greatly improve oral health, and thus overall health, and help reduce or prevent periodontal disease.”

Since we’re at the end of National Pet Dental Health Month and the month of LOVE and I know that everyone is super psyched to get their pets started on a dental cleaning routine STAT, thanks to our very good friends at Pedigree, who make PEDIGREE DENTASTIXS, dental treats that are clinically proven to reduce tartar build up,  we have a great giveaway to help one lucky reader get started on that dental cleaning routine!

Pawing It Forward With Frosty Paws

It might be freezing cold outside but you can bet that I’m not missing out on my all-time favorite snack at this time of the year.

Even though my body is cold my taste buds still long for a nice big bowl of ice cream a few times a week which is when I am called Frosty Fingers.

But I’m not suppose to be talking about human ice cream here, I’m suppose to be talking about dog ice cream!

The very cool people from Frosty Paws asked if we would be interested in giving away some free coupons for their ever so tasty ice cream made just for dogs and of course I said yes, because who doesn’t want to give away free ice cream to dogs?

Frosty Paws makes a great occasional treat for dogs who like to change things up a bit. The ice cream is fortified with protein, vitamins and minerals with no added sugar, artificial flavors or colors and come in 2 flavors, Original and Peanut Butter. Yum!

I’ve given the boys Frosty Paws a few times and with one exception, they really enjoyed the nice cool treat. The exception was that Sherman swallowed his Frosty Paw whole and I think the coldness shocked his throat because as fast as he swallowed it, it came back up………and then he ate it again.

Pawing The Frosty Goodness Forward.

I was given 10 Frosty Paws prize packages to give away: The adorable Frosty Paws mascot and (2) coupons for a box containing (4) Frosty Paws.

To put a different spin on this instead of giving away 10 of these prize packages I have decided to paw it forward. What I mean by that is, I have chosen 3 bloggers who have dogs that I think would enjoy this cool treat. I have sent them each (2) prize packages, (1) for their dog and (1) for them to give away to another blogger, family member or friend of their choice.

I sent the packages off today to the following blogs:

Mark Poulin MarmarSuperstar Pet Lovers Magnetic Necklace Review and Giveaway

Today I’m doing our first review and giveaway on jewelry. I’m not a huge jewelry fan and something really has to catch my eye in order for me to be interested enough to take a second glance.

Mark Poulin’s new interchangeable magnetic necklaces caught my eye the first time I saw them, specifically his MarmarSuperstar brand that features dogs.

I was given the opportunity to select any item in the Mark Poulin Etsy stores,  marmar.etsy.com and marmarsuperstar.etsy.com, that I wanted to review and I choose the Mutt Love Necklace.

This is three necklaces in one.

Made with a pewter bezel that hangs on a 30″ silvertone ball chain.
The set comes in a hinged tin ready for gift giving.
You can add other one inch magnets for endless possibilities

Gracie loved the necklace set as soon it arrived. She wanted to wear it to school to make all the girls jealous.

I told her that I wanted to wear it to work to make all the girls jealous.

We came to the agreement that we would alternate days.

The necklace magnets are super cute and very easy to interchange, so easy that Gracie said she would demonstrate it for you.

A Shoe, A Bark, A Lick, And Sometimes A Fat Lip. That’s How My Dogs Welcome Me Home.

A shoe, a bark, a lick, and the occasional fat lip is how Sherman and Leroy welcome me home each and everyday.

Leroy is the “shoe welcome home dog”.

I don’t have a picture with him holding a shoe, so a football will have to do.

As soon as I enter the door he grabs one of my shoes off of the bar stool, runs up  to me to and lets out a low grumble and then takes off running in circles. If he can’t find a shoe that he likes he will grab a boot, and if he can’t find a boot he’ll race around frantically until he can find something to put in his mouth and run around with. Once it was a pool table ball. Another time it was a Pepsi can, and yet another time it was a ping pong paddle.

It’s a cute little ritual that can bring a smile to my face even after one of the longest days.

Sherman is the “licker, howler dog”.

He’ll be howling at the door as soon as the he hears the garage door open. As I push my way in he is the first to give me a lick in any area where skin is exposed. He expects me to bend down to accept a kiss and I always oblige. Sometimes this ends in a fat lip. Sometimes it does not. It all depends on how long I’ve been gone. If I’m gone for anything longer than an hour, I’ll usually end up with a fat lip because he’s so excited that I really didn’t leave him forever like he thought.

Disney’s Santa Paws 2. The Santa Pups Movie Is Here!

Disney’s Santa Pups are here just in time to kick off your holidays!

We’re not talking about the Buddies, Golden Retrievers … same Director, Writer and Producer, Robert Vince, but different pups – Great Pyrenees pups, and Cheryl Ladd are the stars of Santa Paws 2. The Santa Pups.

About the Movie:

The story is full of holiday spirit and puppy mischief!  Starring a brand-new litter of the cutest talking pups ever — Hope, Jingle, Charity and Noble — it’s perfect for the whole family. When Mrs. Claus travels to Pineville, the playful Santa Pups stow away on her sled. Taking mischief to a whole new level, they begin granting joyful wishes to Pineville’s boys and girls, but something goes terribly wrong — the Christmas spirit begins to disappear. Now the Santa Pups and Mrs. Claus must race to save Christmas around the world. From the creators of Disney Buddies, this magical, heartwarming tale is brimming with hope, cheer and Christmas spirit.

 About the Pups:

This cute litter consists of three female pups and one male pup. HOPE is the daring tomboy who wears a backwards red cap and rarely looks before she leaps. JINGLE is the diva with a bell on her collar who loves to sing, but can’t carry a tune. CHARITY is the girliest and most self-centered of the pups, with a mistletoe barrette, who has yet to learn the meaning of her name. And NOBLE is the mischievous only brother and self-appointed leader who is distinguished by a cheeky black spot around his eye.

I don’t know about you but any holiday movie that has Santa, and white fuzzy puppies creating mischief right around the holidays sounds like a perfect movie to me!

And guess what? We have 2 DVD’s of Santa Paws 2. The Santa Pups. to give away! Pawsome!

Time To Start Thinking About Those Holiday Cards!

I don’t know about you but I’m already starting to plan out my holiday cards. Last year I waited way too long and I was left rushing around trying to get pictures that weren’t “holiday card worthy, ” and to be honest, I was quite disappointed in my efforts.

That’s not going to happen this year!

I already have visions of photo props and dogs wearing holiday cheer dancing around in my head.

That’s why I was so excited to see that Shutterfly was on their game too for this holiday season.  For the past 2 years I have gotten my Holiday Cards from Shutterfly and I have never been disappointed with their selection or quality of cards and this years selection is sure to not disappoint.

A Dog Named Boo. Book Review and Giveaway.

A Dog Named Boo. How One Dog and One Woman Rescued Each Other-and the Lives They Transformed Along the Way has to be added to the top 5 books that I have read this year. Oh, who am I kidding, it has to be among one of the top 5 books I have read in the last 20 years.

This is a true story about a dog named Boo who changed his owner, Lisa J. Edwards, life in an unexpected and wonderful way. Boo, the runt of an abandoned litter, the dog who took a year to house train, the dog who was deemed the dunce of obedience class, the dog who bumped into things because of his poor eyesight, goes onto to be a true miracle worker changing the lives of many people who he comes in contact with.

Fresh and Clean Breath, It’s What Every Dog Wants

According to the AVMA, dental disease is the most common diagnosed health problem in dogs and cats. Dental disease, just like in humans, can lead to painful infections and in severe cases can lead to life threatening illness in dogs and cats.

While regular dental checkups are essential to help maintain your pet’s dental health, there are a number of signs that dental disease has already started in your pet’s mouth:

  • Bad breath—Most pets have breath that is less than fresh, but if it becomes truly repugnant, that’s a sign that periodontal disease has already started.
  • Frequent pawing or rubbing at the face and mouth.
  • Reluctance to eat hard foods.Red swollen gums and brownish teeth.

If you notice any of the signs above you should contact your veterinarian for a dental check up.

Brushing your dogs teeth between dental check up is a great way to maintain their dental health. In a perfect world I would brush my dogs teeth everyday, but let’s face it, I am lucky to get it done 3 times a week. In between brushing and dental check ups I rely on dental chew products to help us out, which was why I was so exited to receive this bag of fun from Pedigree filled with tons of dental products for dogs and a few fun things for me.
