Sherman can swim!!
(He-He. Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
That picture was taken during the day, but what happened that night was the real story! Of course as luck would have it, I did not have my camera so I have to improvise!
My newfs have never been swimming before. Yup, that’s right I have 2 newfoundlands, water dogs by nature, and they have never been swimming, I am a bad, bad mom. I have my own distorted reasons for this:
1. I am afraid they won’t know how to swim.(yes, I am afraid my dogs who have
webbed paws for swimming will not know how to swim.)
2. I am afraid they will drown. (again, I am afraid my water dogs will drown.)
3. Remember from a previous post, there is something wrong with me.
4. We have an above ground pool and they have never showed any interest in going in
it, except if you count the time each one of them squeezed under the fence,in the
winter, walked on the ice and fell through the cover.(bad dogs!) After that I
almost took down the pool myself, but I was out voted by the kids and husband.
So it has been very hot here lately and the dogs have been bored. I have been feeling bad for the them because they are bored. So a few weeks ago we started introducing them to the pool, neither one was interested. One night I told my husband to act like he was struggling in the water and see if one of them would jump in to save him. Sherman walked off the deck and sat by the door to go in the house and Leroy just layed down and stared at the birds. Ok….what the heck? So now I was determined, I just had to know if I had the only 2 newfoundlands in the world that did not know how, or want to swim. So the other night, the lightbulb in my enormous brain went on….I’ll use Sherman’s favorite toy, the toy he can’t live without, his whole reason for living, his yellow kong football! Well, needless to say it worked. Now I know that dogs perception is not like ours so we went in steps, we set it on the ladder and he grabbed it, we set in the water and he stuck his nose in. We set it a bit further out and his paws got wet, we set it out a bit further and in he went!!!! YAY! He could swim, he didn’t drown!!! YAY!!!! I was so proud!
He did it twice and then he was just mentally exhausted so I turned my focus to Leroy, well Leroy just wasn’t sure, his attention span isn’t all that long so a toy didn’t work well for him, but I have complete faith in him. He will go in when no one is around, I’ll just walk out one day and there will be Leroy swimming all by himself, but for now my dog-Sherman, is the rockstar.
So since I didn’t get any pictures of this historical moment, I’ll have to leave you with Sherman in his baby pool, the only pool he knew existed before Friday!
YOU GO SHERMAN!!
