The Lifeguards

Whenever you read a book about Newfoundlands there is always a part in it about Newfs, kids and water.
Something about how Newfs just have the natural instinct to want to jump in the water and rescue children when they see them in a pool, lake, or any body of water.
Not my Newfs.
They could care less.
No matter how much the kids are splashing, screaming and goofing around it has never had any affect on Sherman or Leroy.
They just lay there and watch.
That is…..up until this weekend.
This past week their “lifeguard” instincts kicked in.
Yay!!!!
It all started when the kids were playing Marco Polo.
The was a lot of yelling and laughing going on and Leroy started to pace.
Back and forth he went.
Then the barking started.
It was like he was telling the kids to “KNOCK IT OFF!”
The kids took the hint after a few minutes and he settled back down.
My husband tried to get him to join the fun.
But he didn’t want any part of that.
Even when we offered him a flotation device, he still declined the invitation.
Later that night night it was Sherman’s turn to take over the lifeguard duties.
His approach was similar to Leroy’s, wanting to be front and center by the stairs.
But then he decided he needed to be a bit closer, just in case.
Then believe it or not he jumped in!
O.k.
O.k.
Maybe he didn’t jump in.
Maybe…..just maybe…..
somebody gave him a little nudge.
Just a little nudge, and in he went!
He swam around for about a minute and then climbed out.
He did awesome.
I was so proud of him.
He made my weekend.
****Just a little note.

Due to some medical issues that I have to take care of this week, and a unexpected death in the family over the weekend I will not be blogging this week.
I also had to cancel my trip California for the BlogHer conference:(

We hope to be back in full blogging speed next week.

Hoping your week ends on a better note than it started and that all is back to normal soon.We spend two weeks on Lake Superior every summer. When our Matilda was still alive and she thought the kids had been in the water long enough she would swim out and haul them in by their bathing suits. She had no formal training, just her natural Newfie instincts. Blessings.Julie
