We all know how serious I am about grooming Sherman and Leroy. Most of my spare time is spent in the garage grooming them, or if I am a lazy, I just lay down next to them on the floor and groom away. At night when you are sleeping, I am grooming. On Friday night when you are all out having a good time, I am in the garage grooming.
So when I was contacted by FURminator a few weeks ago asking if I would be interested in performing a review on their new line of grooming tools, I got a little excited.
Doing a review on a grooming tool for me is like a baker doing a review on a new oven. It’s heaven! Grooming tools are a girl’s best friend, at least they are this girls best friend.
I have a dozen or more grooming tools, but I only use a select few on a daily basis. These chosen few are the ones that have proven themselves over and over again that they can perform the task that it was intended for. I don’t have to worry about them doing more damage then good. (Yes, I really get into my grooming tools.)
Before I could get started on my review I needed to determine what tools would work best with the Newfoundland coat type.
FURminator’s website has a great feature to help you select the best tool for your dog. All you have to do is enter a little bit of information about your dog.
Based on the information that you provided the website will suggest 2 tools that are recommended for your dog.
The site suggested the slicker brush and the large finishing comb for us.
So that is what I got, which was fine by me, because I already have both of these tools by other brands so it would give me a great way to compare.
When I received the FURminator grooming tools, I was quite impressed by the quality of the products. They are sturdy and big.
2 features that stood out right away was the contour design of the handles and the anti-microbial plastic which helps keep germs and bacteria to a minimum.
Comfortable handles are important when you do a lot of grooming. I have had my hand cramp many times during a grooming session. I mean look at the comb I was using before I got my new one.
It’s been chewed and barely has a handle left, but it was my favorite comb and I could’t find one that I liked as much as this, so I endured the uncomfortable chewed handle.
Guess what? I don’t have to use that old, chewed up comb anymore because there’s a new favorite comb in this girls hand!
I loved…..loved the FURminator wide tooth comb. The rounded stainless steel teeth rotate 360 degrees and gently turn to remove small mats and tangles fast with very little snagging. I especially liked using it behind the ears and on the Newfs tails.
Just look at how much hair the comb pulled out with just a few passes through Sherman’s coat
I was very impressed. It went through Sherman’s coat a lot smoother than my other comb and it pulled out the undercoat, not the guard hairs, which is very important for us.
I was equally impressed with the slicker brush which has a new dual head design that follows the natural contours of the dogs head and body while keeping the bristles in the correct working position.
Basically this means that the slicker brush formed to Sherman’s head and body so that I could cover the most coat possible in one motion and is an excellent tool for separating and untangling fur.
Did it work?
Yes.
The slicker brush will now join the front line with the rest of my favorite grooming tools.
One more thing that I really liked about the FURminator grooming tool is the handy protective cases that each tool came with.
I do most of my grooming in the garage so it is very important to me that I keep our tools protected to keep them in top working condition!
** Disclaimer I was provided a slicker brush and a wide tooth comb from FURminator in return for my honest review of these products. The opinions expressed here are mine and mine only.

There are two slicker brushes, hard and soft, on their website. Do you know which yours is? Also, great blog. This is tidbitswittrish, Pandy's mom, from IG. Hello again!

I've heard a lot of good reviews about Furminator from professional groomers to pet owners. As a Mobile Dog Groomer in Adelaide at City Dogs, I want to make sure that the grooming tools I make use ensure they are effective and safe for the pets. The Furminator may seem an expensive grooming tools but I can definitely say that for the pets, it's "life-changing".

Hi Lene, I don't use a slicker brush that often but when I do it's a soft slicker. I have one that is large and one that is medium sized.

Hi Jenn,
I was wondering if you have ever tried on your Newfs and if so what you though of their DeShedding tools...?
Our Newf is shedding like crazy and I have kept putting off buying their DeShedding tool for fear of damaging his coat...
Any feedback and advice would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time and effort,
Anna

Hi Anna, I have used the slicker and the comb by Furminator. I have not ever actually used the Furminator deshedding tool. I have used the Mars Coat King on the Newfs but I use it sparingly because it is very easy to make a Newf bald and it can damage the guard hairs, I only use it on certain areas like their chest and pants where the hair is really coarse and thick. I personally, really like using a rake and a wide tooth comb when the Newfs are blowing coat. The rake gets so much of the undercoat out. Sometimes I will blow their coat with high velocity dog dryer, this gets a lot of the loose hair out. I also always use a grooming spray before I groom to help protect the coat form damage. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
