There’s 2 Seasons And Then There’s Mud.

DSC_03331

As I sit here tonight sipping on my beer and trying to focus on writing my next post about dogs and ballparks,  I can’t help but be distracted by the muddy paw prints on my floor. And why is there mud splattered on my walls?

Obviously I’m not overly concerned about it because I have no plans on mopping it up any time soon but they’re more muddy than normal and it’s causing my thoughts to wander.

One reason that they’re more muddy than normal is because my husband has decided that he’s no longer wiping muddy paws. He’s done. After 9 years of wiping 8 ginormous paws he’s literally throwing in the towel.

I was not aware that was an option but we haven’t had that much mud this year compared to other years so whatever.

The other reason why they’re muddy is because we got 8 inches of snow on Saturday.

And then it rained on Sunday.

And now it’s 55 degrees.

Which brings me to our seasons.

Dog-less people have Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

People with dogs, large dogs, particularly Newfoundlands that live in an area where all 4 seasons are experienced, have Mud, Summer, Mud and Winter as seasons. There is no Spring or Fall. Those seasons have been taken over by mud.

Since we had a pretty mild Winter here in Ohio, I thought we were going to get away with ONE Mud season. Mother Nature wasn’t going to let me get off that easy though. Sigh.

Mud season can be a real bitch.

Even more so if you treasure your yard.

Having 2 Newfoundlands there is no such thing as having a beautiful yard with luscious green grass. Unless you have a ginormous yard and are able to devote half of that to your dog and the other half to your grass.

Otherwise you just have mud if the ground isn’t frozen or dehydrated.

We use to have a pretty yard with luscious green grass, a pool surrounded by beautiful hostas. Then we got Newfoundlands and we had mud. We did our best to eliminate the mud.   We would redirect their backyard routes. 5 days they could use this route and 5 days they could use this route.

It didn’t work.

So then we used straw.

That lasted about a day.

Then we laid down plywood over the mud and straw

That lasted 2 days.

Finally after a few years we said screw it and poured a HUGE cement patio over the muddiest area of the yard.

We cut our mud back a good 50% percent.

It was a win all the way around.

So I guess my point is that I should of added “Kiss Your Green Grass Goodbye” to the post I wrote last week.

Oh and the answer to my question about the mud splatter on the walls…….I just remembered that when I took Leroy for a walk he walked through a ginormous mud puddle and I forget to wipe him off so the mud must of been flying off of him when he came up the stairs which means the walls by the stairs must look awesome right now.

Now let me get back to writing that nice Spring baseball post.

Oh Jen, I do love your posts! Especially ones like this that make realize I'm not the only one who doesn't worry any more about muddy paw prints! Our entire yard turns into a giant mud puddle when it rains, and sometimes it comes in under the back door. Ugh! But I just wipe the girls' paws off as best I can and say "F*** it!" if the floors get dirty. A wet corner of a towel does wonders just before visitors show up.

We had a newf for 12 years and now we're on #2 with another one joining us hopefully this summer. Thanks for the chuckles. Now I know I am not alone... There are some sacrifices that are just worth making when it comes to being a Newf family.

I love this! Mud season is a thing here in NH as well. We had also given up on wiping paws...I imagine golden retriever paws are almost as bad as Newfie paws, just a little smaller. But that fur in between Sheba's toes holds every ounce of mud they walk through! Since we just moved into a new house, I've been more diligent about keeping things clean (I'm sure I'll get over that)....but I'm already getting tired of daily sweeping or vacuuming. Plus the previous owners of this home obviously didn't have dogs because they have white vinyl floors in some rooms. White! Vinyl! Daily mopping is definitely not my thing. Those floors will be replaced. :)
