I know that I just gave a 1-month update on how Odin was doing last week but I thought you guys would enjoy this as much as I did.
As I mentioned in last week’s post, Odin has been settling in nicely and getting into a good routine.
He knows when it’s time to eat, go for a walk and get cookies.
He is bonding well with everyone in the house and he has been a little more comfortable in the yard but still didn’t want to spend a lot of time out there.
Well, Thursday all that changed and Odin gave me something that I didn’t think I was going to see for quite a while, let alone ever.
On Monday I noticed that instead of quickly doing his business and immediately running back to my side or the door to go inside, he was sitting in the front part of the backyard.
By Thursday he realized that the squirrels hung out towards the back part of the yard so he began sitting in the back corner of the yard waiting for squirrels.

As soon as I saw him sit like this in the yard I breathed a sigh of relief and I had to take a picture.
I was hoping he eventually get to this point.
Comfortable enough to relax and enjoy the yard.
Survey his land and the things around it.
And most of all, except that this was HIS.
He may have a slight obsession with squirrels by the way he intensely watches their every move and I have no doubt that if one of them makes a bad choice and falls in the yard, Odin will have a snack.

The squirrels will just have to learn that this yard is no longer squirrel safe and is protected by Odin for many years to come.
He also saw his first deer right outside the fence and gave the deer quite a little scare when he barked.
I think he knows there’s a yard out there to protect now and he’s game for it.
I still am not sure if he’s thought about jumping the fence and it is a concern of mine since he did escape his previous home often.

For that reason, he is still considered a flight risk and is not left outside alone, ever.
The good thing is that he responds to me telling him no.
He had his paw on the bottom part of the fence when he was barking at the deer and I told him no and he backed right off so that was reassuring but I still won’t risk it.
Oh, and the other big thing that happened this week was that I fell in love with him.
And by that I mean he’s now a piece of my heart forever and it was this cheesy face that did it:

Instant melt and instant injection right into the place that he belongs.

He is beautiful. I miss my Newfie, Brumis. It was my experience that Newfies are a bit clumsy, less agile than other breeds. But happy swimmers! And so gentle. While huge, Brumis was fascinated with wildlife, but never aggressive with it. A kitten could sleep on his head! Enjoy!

Your boy looks just like my Oreo. We just lost him to the medications he was on for the autoimmune disease these breeds are known for. I miss him so much already. Seeing your pup brings me back on so many good memories. Thank you for sharing him! Love the Newfoundland breed.
