The other day I went to visit my sister. She lives out in the sticks, or the country, whichever you prefer.
I went by myself, which was nice. The kids didn’t want to go because they said it was too hot.
Wussies.
And my sister told me not to bring the dogs.
Duh. It’s 95 degrees at my house, which mean it’s 105 degrees at your house.
I don’t know who she thought she was talking to.
Anyway, I had several reasons for wanting to go out and visit her.
1. Because I love her and she’s my sister.
2. She had my birthday present.
3. She got a new steel roof.
It’s red. I thought a steel roof would be silver, but it’s red. It’s pretty cool.
4. She got a new greenhouse. It’s pretty neat and hot. She made me go inside just to feel how hot a greenhouse is on a 95 degree day. I think she was trying to kill me.
The greenhouse is going to grow parsley for Gibby the Guinea Pig. Isn’t my sister the best? She bought a greenhouse just to grow things for Gibby!
5. I wanted to work on my photography. My sister’s house is the perfect place to do this. She has a lot of animals there, which makes for some potentially good photos.
It’s actually kind of freaky when you go there because there are goats and sheep that are roaming around.
Some of them even come up to greet you, like their a dog or something and wait for you to pet them.
I have to be honest, it freaks me out a little bit when my sister tells me that there’s a goat approaching from the left.
This little guy was hanging out under a tree trying to catch some shade. He has a name but I forget what it is because they all have names and I had a lot of goats approaching me at one time and I lost track of who was who.
My sister is going to be mad because I don’t remember his name.
She also has horses and chickens.
Chickens I tell you.
Eck!
I’m sorry, I don’t have anything else to say about chickens.
She has normal animals too, like this cat Moo. I know his name because he is my enemy. Mr. Moo has what I think cat owners call cat-attitude. I call him Mr.Meanie.
He has bitten both Bobby and Gracie at least once and I think he was thinking about making me his next victim.
Think again Mr.Moo. I’m not falling into your trap.
Your lucky your photogenic.
Then there was this cat hiding in the bushes.
I forget his name. Don’t tell my sister.
I worked really hard on trying to get this picture perfect but I just couldn’t get the shot I wanted.
I even burned my butt cheek when I went to sit down on the hot rocks to get closer to eye level.
Of course I didn’t realize the rocks would be hot, but even when I realized it I still didn’t move, and yes, I now have a welt on my butt cheek.
It would of been worth it if I got the shot I wanted. But I didn’t, so it wasn’t.
Obviously I could of moved the orange pot that was in the way, but I had no idea it was reflecting that way when I was shooting.
Something was off with the focus on my part. I didn’t want the leafs to blur as much as they did and I’m not sure what setting I needed to adjust to get this right, so if any of my photography friends have any tips to offer, they would be greatly appreciated.
I didn’t have any luck with this flower either.
Nice clear picture, but I wanted a bee on it.
I know, I know, you can’t have everything, but there was a bee on it when I didn’t have my camera with me, so I wanted a bee on it again.
I said a bee, not a fly.
Geesh.
Another thing that my sister has that caught my eye is this peculiar but familiar sign.
You see she use to have Newfoundlands that graced her beautiful farm.
She is actually the one who got me hooked on Newfies.
But I don’t see any of those around here now, do you?
We’re going to see what we can do about that in the next year or so.
Let’s just say it’s in the works.
I just realized that my loving sister did a post on my visit to her house. You have to check it out because after I left she got the damn picture of the bee on the flower. She’s taunting me. Check out her post, Flowers for my Sister.

What a cool place with all those animals . Mr Moo is cute
Benny & Liky
Jen says:
Thank you, Mr. Moo is kind of cute, but he’s mean:)
Two French Bulldogs says:
My name in Lily not Liky Ms. IPad
Jen says:
Ha-ha, Ms IPad made a typo:)
SUGAR: goldenwoofs says:
Woof! Woof! We live now in upcountry (its actually cooler)… mom is still getting use to all the animals especially the big cows that Mooo a lot. She loves taking photos of flowers too. COOL! roof .. we are curious to know what’s the advantage of having a steel roof? Lots of Golden ALOHA n Woofs, Sugar
Jen says:
I think the main advantage is that it lasts longer than a regular shingled roof. At least 40 years I believe.
sprinkles says:
I wanna go to your sister’s house and hang with the animals!
Jen says:
It’s fun to go there. The kids always have a blast!
Finn says:
Cool greenhouse! I love that pic of the chickens!!
Jen says:
The greenhouse is super cool!
houndstooth says:
Hmmm… Will a Sherman or Leroy junior be making his way to the farm?
Since I know your sister reads this, I’m thinking you’re getting what’s coming to you on the name forgetting front! lol
P.S. Thanks for the nice words about the blog! I got a little confused with the MailChimp, too, so if I can help, let me know. They have some great video tutorials that helped me out a lot. One thing I had to figure out is that there’s a WordPress plugin you need to activate to get it working. Once you do that, it’s a lot easier! I thought I was losing my mind!
Jen says:
One day I hope, but the plan is that my sister is going to get a female:))
Thanks for the info on Mailchimp, I will be emailing you for sure, if I try to figure it out again!
Fluffypopcorn says:
What a lovely post this is.
The photos are lovely, even though you didn’t quite snap what you wanted to.
I love them still! Xoxo, Popcorn!
Jen says:
Thank you so much!
Lana says:
Great post and pics! I like the way the cat eyes through the leaves turned out. I’m not sure if you could do anything about the focus….did you use manual focus? I saw that you have a Nikon. That’s what I use, too:) Hopefully I will need a Newfie Crossing sign by the end of October (if all works out *this* time)! I already have the goat crossing sign, and I really need it since we caught them out in the road the other day, after they escaped the electric fence. The dry hot weather is causing problems with the electric fence, too.
Jen says:
Thanks Lana! I was on manual focus.
A Newfie sign by October, that is great! Yay! Congrats!
A goat crossing sign is a great idea!
Nichole says:
Your sister’s house sounds like a fantastic field trip!
What fun! Great pics!
Jen says:
It’s always great to go out there and get away!
jan says:
So what was your birthday present?
Jen says:
Ha-ha! Sorry forgot, A whole bunch of Bath and Body Works lotions, body washes and hand soaps. One of which was my favorite scents: Lemon Vanilla:))
Jodi says:
Oh Jen, you make me laugh. Why the hell are you wearing shorts that let your butt cheeks out?
Question for your sister, how does rain sound on a steel roof and what is the purpose? Does it keep it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer?
What did you get for your birthday?
Jen says:
LMAO, I sear I was not wearing daisy dukes. I was wearing regular length shorts, I don’t know what happened!
I asked my sister the same questions about the roof-the rain isn’t any louder than on a regular roof, there is wood and insulation underneath so it muffles the sound. It does not keep the house any warmer or cooler, but it lasts longer than a regular shingled roof with less maintenance.
Bath and Body works, tons of it! My sister spoils me:)
Bassetmomma says:
Your sisters place looks awesome! I love the “nameless” little goat. All your pictures turned out great. Sorry about your butt cheek! ha!ha!
Jen says:
Thanks! My sister called me and told me that the nameless goat is named JD:)
The OP Pack says:
Yes, indeed, Moo is handsome but he definitely has a look that says, Watch out! Your photos are great.
Hmmmm, puppies in the making?
Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
Jen says:
He does have that look!
No puppies in the making as of right now, the plan is to eventually get a girl for my sister:)))
Kristine says:
You are too funny. Bee or no bee you took some great photos! Full confession: I am in love with goats. I can’t wait till we can move to a place that allows farm animals. A goat will be the first purchase I make, I don’t care what my husband says. They are just so cute and smart and cool! Your sister’s house sounds like a blast!
I’d watch for Mr. Moo as well, though. He looks like a cagey one.
Jen says:
Thanks Kristine!
I don’t know about goats, there’s something about them that scares me, I think that it is their skinny little legs!
Alfie |Alfie's Blog says:
So, about the first cat photo – my human really likes it because you’ve managed to create some really cool foreground blur while the cat’s eye is in focus!
Are you using an SLR camera? She thinks you might have set the camera’s aperture to a low number, which means that you get a very narrow depth of field making everything in front of and behind the actual focus point blur out. This is the setting you use for portraits and traditionally you only blur out the background, but if the aperture number is small enough you can create some cool foreground blur just like you did too! AS a comparison if the aperture number would have been high (say over 10) you would have seen both the cat and leaves in focus (wide depth of field).
You could also have a look at what type of autofocus you used. Some settings track the subject and will keep re-focusing when you move the lens around, whereas others lock onto the subject and won’t change.
Personally, I can’t believe you’d ever want to photograph c-a-t-s and I don’t blame you for forgetting their names *Waggy tail*
Jen says:
Thank you! Here’s the low down on my camera:
It is an SLR and after reading your comment I think my problem was that at first I had it set on the sports setting, which makes total sense that it was blurring the leafs. I also had the issue where the lens did keep re-focusing. At this point I wasn’t sure what I needed to adjust, so I should of changed it to a higher ap to get the cat and leafs in focus. I wasn’t sure if I had to change the ISO or not.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me, I am going to have mess around with the settings more, instead of just shooting!
kristi says:
Well, this was a fun post!! Okay Jen, the black & white goat is JD and he is 12 years old. The cat you were trying to get a pic of is Alvin, the one that always just jumps into your arms unannounced. The fat sheep was Abby who already had her baby. You forgot to mention that the mess of rocks behind the greenhouse is where your wonderful husband will be installing the water line and pump to the greenhouse;) The metal roof idea is because it lasts longer and it matches the red roof on my chicken coop!! Oh, and I love the way it looks. A welt on your butt cheek? I know your my sister but really? The newfie idea needs to start getting in motion soon. Oh, and come over to my blog to see the flowers I have for you……..
Jen says:
Thanks sis! For some reason the only goats name I remember is Liberty and the only cat’s name I remember is Moo. I know all the dog’s names!
I can’t believe you got the bee on the flower! Ugggh!
Thanks for the great post on your blog, you did a fantastic job taking pictures. I’ll get over there again soon and sit in the relaxing area that you showed me and wait for the bees!
melF says:
You my friend, are damn funny! I was giggling the whole time. I think we need to make it a goal that you learn the names of each and every animal at your sister’s place. Just think of it as learning all the constellations in the sky (like I had to do in astronomy class – do you think I remember any of them now? Four!!).
Loved the goat pic and the fly pic. Want your sister’s greenhouse-bad.
Off to go see your sister’s pic of a bee on a flower.
Jen says:
LOL! Thanks Mel! I think my sister has just as many farm animals as there are constellations, maybe more:) That’s the way it seems anyway, for some reason I can only remember 1 goats name, 1 cats name, zero sheep names and zero horses names! My kids know them all! I do however know all the names of her dogs:)
The greenhouse is way cool! I want one too!
Karen Friesecke says:
Your Sister’s farm is SO COOL and I love the greenhouse!
Jen says:
Thanks Karen! She has a really nice set up out there. I love going there!
Sue at Talking Dogs says:
Just stopped by as part of my effort to catch up on my blog reading and glad I did. Love your sister’s place!
Jen says:
Thanks for stopping by Sue and taking a look!
Mom says:
Glad you got out to Kristi’s. Moo is an awful and does have a “BAD” cat-attuide. He got me and Dad too!!! Just because Kris has 40 something goats & sheep you still should remember some of them! Just think “Vermont” and the American Revolution…..it helps.
I can’t believe you just got a regular fly….you should have gotten one of the “horse” flys….those are huge!! Most of your pics are awsome.
Now…..about the Newfie that Kristi is suppose to get…….why is the “dog sitter” the last to know?????????
Jen says:
Geesh Mom, most if pictures are awesome? Is there one that you didn’t like? Lol?
You know as well as I know that there is another Newfie in Kristi’s near future, and as far as baby sitting goes, we have discussed this and Bob will on baby sitting detail:) you and Dad can relax!
FiveSibesMom says:
Great shot of the black bearded goat! Your sister’s place looks so nice…listening to the rain hit the tin roof must be wonderful…such a great sound!
The FiveSibes and I also wanted to say “thank you” for your kind words and support of our Chloe…it has been so welcomed and appreciated!
2 brown dawgs says:
OK I love your flower picture sans bee. There is something about the shadowing that is really neat. And I want your sister’s metal roof on our cabin. Whenever we need to replace that roof, that is what we are getting. Won’t have to rake the snow off the roof anymore.
Jen says:
Thanks Linda! The steel roof is really nice and my sister did mention that she won’t have to worry about the snow building up on the roof this winter!
Pamela says:
Very funny post.
I think it’s great that you and your sister are both creative bloggers. I can’t even get my sister on Facebook.
Jen says:
Thanks Pamela!
My sister is the one that introduced me to blogging, she was blogging for a few years before I started. Now FB is another story, I have been trying to talk her into getting on there!
Hawk aka BrownDog says:
Hi Y’all,
So glad you clarified that the picture following the “burned butt cheek” was a flower pot.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Jen says:
Ha-ha! Glad I clarified too:)
Bongo says:
I like those pictures of the cat peeking out – even if it didn’t turn out the way you wanted.
Jen says:
Thank you!
Vicki says:
Love the farm Jen – why don’t you like chickens? I love chickens. Can’t wait till your sis gets a newfie puppy. Bet you’ll remember her name huh?
Nice pics!
Jen says:
There is just something that freaks me out about chickens. I have never been a fan of them. I think it is their ugly feet:)
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says:
Geesh I seem to be having such trouble with my subscription to your blog Jen, keeps taking me off the email list. I just happen to check my readr and saw you had several posts I hadn’t seen. Anyway…
I think the photos are wonderful, and the one of the cat hiding is great! I can’t wait to go check out your sisters post.
Jen says:
That’s my fault. Sorry:) I keep changing my subscribe button, because some people kept saying they were having issues. I think this one is working and I promise I won’t change it again!
