The Rebound.

Yesterday Leroy had a recheck appointment with his vet.

4 months to the exact day that I took him in and his condition was labeled as “grave”.

I wrote last week that I thought I saw significant improvement in Leroy over the last month and many of you have said that he seems to look a lot better in his pictures.

Well I’m very happy to say that you and I were both correct.

After his visit yesterday it appears that Leroy is definitely on the rebound.

Even the vet said he’s starting to look like a Newfoundland again.

His albumin and protein levels are in the normal range. They are low normal but that’s still normal BABY!

Despite being on 4 months of steroids, his liver and kidneys are good.

And the kicker………

His current weight is 141 pounds!

That’s up from the 117 pounds that he was in November.

And that’s REAL WEIGHT.

What I mean by that is that is a HUGE jump in weight and almost a concerning jump.

Of course we wanted weight gain but the first thought that popped in my head when I saw 141 pounds come up on the scale was that was fluid weight.

I was hoping for a weight in the 130’s and 140 wasn’t even a thought.

The vet was mildly concerned about the big jump in weight also and gave Leroy a good once over to see if he felt any fluid.

I know I haven’t felt any fluid but I’m not a vet so I anxiously waited for his thoughts.

The vet could easily palpate Leroy’s organs and his heart and lungs were clear which suggested that there wasn’t any fluid but the test results would be needed to confirm that.

The longest 40 minutes of my life went by and finally the test results were in and suggested that Leroy’s weight gain was TRUE weight gain.

HOLY COW!

BOOM!

Apparently, adding in that third feeding was exactly what Leroy needed.

So we truly are in a good place.

Not out of the woods by any means but clearly on the rebound.

From here we lower the steroids a bit more and hope that Leroy’s body can adjust and pick up some additional work. We’ll go to once a month B12 injections and continue with the diet that he is currently on.

Recheck in March and hopefully keep moving forward.
