Last week our friend Jessica over at You Did What With Your Wiener wrote a fun post, 7 Reasons I Look Forward To Fall With My Dogs. Since Fall is my favorite season I thought that it would be great to join in.
All it has taken was 2 days of Fall-like weather to get me in the spirit and now I just want these 90 degree days to be in our past. It’s not that I dislike the Summer, I actually love it, but this Summer has been one of the hottest, driest Summers on record here in Ohio and those undesirable conditions have held Sherman and Leroy hostage in the house and limited our outdoor adventures.
We’ve had enough and now we’re ready to move into Fall.
Fall means fun here so here’s our list of why I look forward to it. (I couldn’t keep it to just 7!)
Fall colors. One of the perks of having a brown Newf is that they look amazing with a Fall backdrop. The reds, the oranges, the yellows and different shades of browns, compliment them. I love exploring local areas and looking for just the right Fall backdrop.
Cooler weather. There’s no more worrying if they are going to overheat in the car, out of the car, or walking to the car. There’s no more saying, “It’s too hot for you to stay outside.” We can put the windows down and enjoy the fresh air instead of blasting the air conditioner. Needless to say, our electric bill takes a nice plunge.
Backpacking. They can finally use their backpack again. I’ll have to brush the dust off but we can finally add another layer to them and have them work a bit. Leroy loves wearing the backpack and it shows.
Fall smells. The crisp autumn air, bonfires, mums, apples and pumpkins fill the air. Right now I have at least 10 different variations of pumpkin body wash, lotion, room sprays and candles. My house smells like pumpkin therefore everything in my house smells like pumpkin, including my dogs. Mmmmmm Yum.
Halloween. I can not tell you how much fun I have every year trying to think up a costume for Leroy. When you have a giant breed dog you have to think outside of the box since most dog costumes won’t fit them. I love, love, love thinking up a theme for this. I do think I’ve settled on one for this year which means I’m way ahead seeing as I normally don’t settle on a costume until a week before Halloween.
Apples. ‘Tis the season for big juicy apples! They boys and I both love apples so we can often be seen munching on apple slices during the day. Sometimes we eat them plain, sometimes we dip them in peanut butter and sometimes we sprinkle them with cinnamon or coconut flakes.
Football. I’m a BIG football fan. I love to watch my son play and I love to waste my Sunday watching the Browns lose. It’s a Cleveland thing I guess but what usually happens is that right around half time I get so frustrated that I wind up taking the dogs for a walk to blow of steam and mutter to myself how I’m not going to waste another Sunday watching them. Every Sunday.
Snuggles. Newfs don’t like to snuggle in the Summer, but Fall and Winter is a different story! Who doesn’t want a furry Newf snuggling on the couch next to them on a cool Fall evening?!
Pockets. Fall means hoodies and jeans which means my clothes will have pockets again to carry treats. I seriously had to put some in my bra this Summer because there was no where else to put them. I had to put 6 little Grandma Lucy Bears in my bra. Now we won’t have to worry about awkward moments like that.
Bone Broth. I’ve wanted to make one broth for the dogs for over 2 years now. Fall is the perfect time for me to experiment with this. I made my very first bath last weekend since we had cooler temperatures and I have some tweaking to do so I’ll be making this on and off until I nail it. The boys love it regardless.
The outside comes inside. Leaves become a permanent fixture in the house because they attach themselves to tails and inner thighs and randomly fall off throughout the house. Mud. Towards the end of Fall, mud becomes a home accent also. Every step a Newf takes will be in a mud puddle. No matter how much you wipe their paws they will still leave mud on your floors because their paws are sponges.
Hair. Newfs blow the rest of their coat in the Fall to make room for a nice thick Winter coat. So now you have a house full of leaves, mud and dog hair. It really adds the rustic look to any home.
Those last 2 were a little sarcastic but it’s a small price to pay when you get to enjoy Fall with your Newfoundland.
So how about you? What are some of the reasons that you like Fall?

Fall and Winter have always been my favorite seasons - as a kid I loved playing in the leaves and snow and never really cared much for sand (especially inside my bathing suit). Now that I'm retired? I still prefer Fall and Winter. I love the cooler temps, especially when they follow a hot, muggy summer like the ones we get here in the South. I especially love being able to sit in the carport while Shadow and Ducky run around the yard during their first potty break of the day. Especially once the freakin bugs go back into hibernation! Both girls love being outside - ALL. DAY. LONG! - so the cooler temps make it a lot more pleasant.
And like with your boys, and Jan K's Golden, the leaves, twigs, and other things tend to come in the house via the floofy tail and inner thighs. And with Shadow, every part of her furry self. But I don't mind. Dog hair is part of the decor in my house, too. And definitely YES to the jeans and hoodies! ?

LOL...leaves, mud, dog hair...that is my decor as well (our golden retriever is an expert at collecting things in her tail). We really enjoyed summer but fall is my favorite season as well. I am already enjoying the cool nights that mean I don't have to get up as early in the morning to walk the dogs or play before it gets hot!

You listed most of our reasons.
We use the crockpot for our bone broth and then freeze it into ice cubes so it is a year round option for us.

Fall was always my favorite but now even more so since Moses and Jordan became part of our family. Love taking them to fall festivals when it's cool and the orchard for apples (Jordan's favorite treat too!). Just being able to take walks and play outside with them longer is so much fun. They have so much more energy and Moses goofiness level just explodes while Jordan's energy level increases so that she's getting more much needed exercise. At nearly 3 years they've finally matured enough to blow coat for the first time so that's been quite an experience too when friends come over and see the mounds of brown hair drifting across the floor. I just shrug and say "Lotta Dog, Lotta Hair"!

Haha! I do the same with the hair! Oh well, I can only sweep and vacuum so many times!

Fall and winter are our favorite seasons! Mom loves putting on a sweatshirt and jeans, we love the cool air for our early morning walks, the sound of the crunching leaves under paw, turning on the fireplace in the evenings, snuggling...so much better than summer!
