5 Things My Dogs Do For Me That No One Else Can

Happy National Dog Day! In celebration of this special day I'm honoring Sherman and Leory by sharing 5 things that they do for me that no one else can. I would love for you to join in the fun and share something that your dog(s) do for you!

Happy National Dog Day! Today is the official day to celebrate DOGS!

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. The mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.

For some reason I’ve always had this odd, awesome attachment to dogs.  Besides the humans that are in my family, I get attached and bond to dogs more than I do people. They do things for me that people just can’t.

In honor of National Dog Day I would like to share things that dogs to do for me that people just can’t. No offense to people or those who are closest to me, but dogs just do these things better.

They get me out of bed in the morning.

The only thing that has ever been succesful at getting me out of bed in the morning is Sherman and Leroy. While sometimes I try my best to ignore Leroy’s stalking stare in the morning from the side of my bed, I can’t do for it long. Even on the coldest mornings where I just want to stay snuggled up in bed, he can make me get out.

They lessen my panic attacks.

I suffer some moderate panic attacks and I do take medication for them. My symptoms include a racing heart rate, sweaty palms, limb weakness over active thoughts and stomach issues.  My panic attacks have increased with age and Sherman and Leroy have greatly helped lessen the symptoms and severity. If they are there, I am much calmer because they bring me peace. It can be just because they’re by my side distracting me, because we went for a walk or because they let me brush them for as long as I needed to in order to help ease my anxiety.

They increase my social activity.

I haven’t always been fond of people. Years of working in retail set that into motion when I was a teenager. People just really suck sometimes and in the past I’ve done what I can to avoid them. I don’t like going out and socializing, I don’t like meeting new people BUT when you’re out in public with a Newfie meeting new people is inevitable.

They increase my exercise.

Leroy needs some type of activity every day. That is just the way he is. Our exercise of choice has always been walking and hiking. Some days I don’t feel like I have the energy to walk but Leroy will sit in front of me and bark until I get up and take him. Not only does he need the walk but I do too. Walking has always been a huge stress reliever for me and back in the day,  when I would walk both of the boys separately, I was in the best shape of my life.

They keep my humor intact.

I choose to live my best life through laughter but let’s face it, adulting can be hard. I do my best to make every moment a laughing moment and the boys are so much apart of that. Even on the worst of days they can somehow manage to make a smile or laugh emerge from me. Even on days when I went to just go back to bed and not tackle the day, they can get me out of bed and make me happy that I did.

I’m not sure where I would be in life without Sherman and Leroy. I think everyday I would just be going through the motions waiting for something to happen.

In honor of National Dog Day we would love for you to share something that your dog dogs for you that no one else can!

There's nothing sweeter than a dog in your life - on your lap - and by your side!

Miss Jen, that is a wonderful message. Mom feels the same as you about pets vs humans. She is her happiest around animals and can't imagine her life without them. Mom has a chronic lung disease that she's had all her life and she always looked to pets to give her strength and sanity in dealing with her health issues. Head pets.

Great post, Jen! My doggie-girls are my Earth Angels. They're literally my alarm clocks. And they ground me when things get stressful. And everything you said about Sherman and Leroy holds true for all the dogs I've had in my life as well.
