Paging Dr. Leroy Brown.
Paging Dr. Leroy Brown.
We have an emergency in Room 101.
Dr. Leroy Brown reporting for surgery.
Please give me a brief history of the patient.
Patient:
A 5-year-old intact male who is otherwise healthy but has a past history of eating inedible items.
Owner woke up to the sound of him vomiting up rocks on the floor.
Owner counted 25 rocks and fears there may be more.
X-rays of the abdomen prove that assumption to be true.
The patient is prepped and ready for you to perform exploratory surgery.
Alright, let’s have a look at this.
What is it with dogs and eating rocks these days?
How could a rock actually taste good?
Nurse Blanche,
I’m going to need some more suction, a bag for all these rocks and a peanut butter cookie.
STAT
Yep. These intestines are filled with rocks.
They appear to be limestone rocks.
Let’s have a closer look
It seems like this patient may have eaten some type of stuffing also.
Perhaps not only is he a rock eater but also a dog toy de-stuffer.
Ugh. This stomach is a mess.
Ok.
Moving on…….
Let’s get these rocks removed from the patient and close him up because my internal clock is telling me that it’s time for a pee break and a cookie.
Thank you all for joining me today in the operating room.

***No dogs were harmed in the making of this Halloween post but one stuffed animal did sacrifice some stuffing and a small incision in the upper abdomen.

So clever. Glad your true story ended well. Pica eating can be life threatening (as you know).
