As a proud owner of a big dog, I know how important it is to provide our dogs with comfortable and supportive sleeping options all year round including in the summer.
However, finding a bed that accommodates a larger dog and provides proper cooling can be a challenge.
The other challenge, at least for owners that have large breed dogs with a double coat, is finding a bed that their dog will actually use.
That’s where elevated cooling dog beds come in – they offer a variety of benefits that make them a top choice for big dog owners.
I have a total of 5 dog beds, 2 of which are elevated cooling beds and the only ones that my Newfies and Corgi will use.
Once in a while, the Corgi will take a nap on our Big Barker bed but otherwise, all of my dogs choose to lay on top of the air vents or on the cool ceramic tile.
Now outside is a different story, outside they will all choose our elevated dog bed overlaying on the ground, especially Odin.
So if you’re in the market for a cooling dog bed this summer let’s discuss the benefits of elevated cooling dog beds and what to look for when purchasing one for your big dog.
The Benefits of Elevated Cooling Dog Beds
Elevated cooling dog beds have a lot of benefits for big dogs that range from offering support and comfort to regulating body temperature.
They are designed to provide comfort and relief to dogs during the hot summer months.
These beds are raised off the ground, which allows for better air circulation, keeping your dog cool and comfortable.
They are also designed with cooling features, such as breathable mesh fabric that sits a few inches above the ground which helps to dissipate heat and regulate your pet’s body temperature.
Additionally, elevated beds are beneficial for dogs with joint pain or arthritis, as they reduce pressure on their joints and make it easier for them to get in and out of bed.
When shopping for an elevated cooling pet bed for your large dog, be sure to consider the size, weight capacity, and materials used to ensure it meets your dog’s needs and is durable enough to withstand daily wear and tear.
Support and Comfort
Elevated cooling dog beds offer support and comfort to your dog’s joints and muscles.
For big dogs, this is especially important as they can suffer from joint issues like hip dysplasia and arthritis.
The elevated design of the bed provides a supportive base that helps distribute their weight evenly and reduces pressure on their joints.
Temperature Regulation
Dogs can easily overheat, especially during the summer months.
Elevated cooling dog beds help regulate a dog’s body temperature by allowing air to circulate underneath them.
This helps keep them cool and comfortable, even on hot days.
Durability
Elevated cooling dog beds are often made with durable materials like steel or aluminum, making them long-lasting and able to withstand even the toughest chewers.
We’ve had our elevated cooling bed for over 3 years with no issues and they are in constant use in the summer.
What to Look for in an Elevated Cooling Dog Bed
When shopping for an elevated cooling dog bed for your big dog, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Size
- Material
- Support
Size
Make sure the bed is large enough to accommodate your big dog comfortably.
Big dogs need plenty of space to stretch out, so choose a bed that provides ample room and can withstand their weight.
Material
Look for a bed made with durable and breathable materials.
Mesh or nylon are great options and that material is easy to clean as needed.
Support
The bed should offer proper support for your dog’s joints and muscles.
Look for a bed with a sturdy frame that can support your dog’s weight without sagging or bending.
I like to look for a bed that has extra support in the middle.

I would LOVE to get one of the beds like you have; but I honestly don't know where I'd put it in this little house of mine. Luckily, the bathroom and kitchen floors are cool linoleum.
