Leroy’s Dog Show Report

UGGGHHH……..

That about sums it up as how the show went this weekend with Leroy.

Not exactly what I had hoped for.

He looked good. Really good. The best he has ever looked.

He is lacking some coat because he decided to blow coat Friday night when I gave him a bath. Then when I started to dry him, tufts of hair were blowing off onto the ground. Then I started to cry. Then I got over it.

That wasn’t the issue though.
His looks were not the problem.

It was his movement. His gait was totally off.

You see Leroy is known for his beautiful, effortless gait.  Normally when he gaits around the ring it looks as if he is floating, which is exactly how it should look. Effortless.

On this weekend though, effortless was not the case.

Saturday I wasn’t able to be at the show because I had to work so my husband took him.
When he called and told me that he wouldn’t gait around the ring, I was speechless. My first thought was
“What the hell did you do to him?” Then he said it was weird, he just didn’t want to gait. The handler had to slow down to a walk because Leroy was lagging so far behind.

I didn’t believe him.

So that night I practiced with him in the driveway and he did fine.

Perfect.. actually.

So on Sunday when I went and saw him gait around the ring I almost died.

Seriously. My heart stopped, and not in a good way.

He didn’t want to run. His head was down, not up, his gait was short not long, his tail was down and not out.

WTF?

This was not my Leroy.

Our conclusion is that Leroy did not like the mats that were on the floor in the ring. The mats are there for the dogs to run on so they don’t slip. They have little ridges in them and we think that Leroy just didn’t like the feel of them. Sure he has run on them before, like last year, but he was a puppy then and he wasn’t as observant. (LOL)

How did we come to this conclusion? Well after he was done in the ring we ran him on the regular floor and he moved beautiful again. Go figure.

Don’t worry we are not giving up. That’s not my style.

Our next show is in 3 weeks. It is the Crown Classic in Cleveland and it is one of the bigger shows of the year.  It is the same show that Sherman earned his championship title at  AND  the same show, different day, that Leroy beat Sherman.  It is a 4 day show and Leroy will be there 3 of the days.

In the meantime Leroy and I will be attending at least 2 conformation classes (dog show classes) a week for the next 3 weeks. HE WILL get used to those dang mats.

Reminds me so much of our Newfoundland, Belle! Belle had amazing balance and coordination. We had a buffet table with a vase on it in a highly trafficked tight corner. Never once did Belle knock into the table. Never once did her tail tip the vase either. BTW, The Honest Kitchen's Embark made Otter's coat more lush and gorgeous. It also made her look younger. Several people told me and the boss said it looked like she had a facial.

Sorry the day did not go well, but there will be those challenges and learning days. As long as he was not spooked or even refused to move. And the fact that he was willing to do it again Sunday sounds very good. He was sharing his sensitive side. Now mine are sharing their loud side!
