Taking The Plunge

In an effort to offer the dogs more of a chance to find their inner water dog instincts I have set out to explore other areas besides our backyard swimming pool.

So yesterday my husband and I headed to the park in search of some type of body of water that would allow the dogs to easily romp through it.  I know the park has one, because we have been there before, but due to short term memory loss, I had to seek it out……..again.

It wasn’t too hard and after a few “wrong turns” we found the perfect spot.

Let’s just say Leroy took to the water like, well like a Newfoundland.

He plunged in with all four paws and took a drink.

It was a proud moment for me.

Sherman was a bit more delicate and entered the water more like a ballerina, tip toe, tip toe. No pictures of him because I was holding his leash and the camera. I wasn’t about to hold Leroy’s leash and the camera.

That’s just silly.

That’s an accident waiting to happen.

Just ask my husband who almost took the plunge with Leroy.

There’s no pictures of that either, because I was laughing too hard.

You see, we were amateurs on our water adventure.

We knew we were seeking out water for the dogs, but we wore jeans, socks and our brand new sneakers. We also only brought the 6 foot leashes.

A 6 foot leash is not very smart when you want your dog to explore the water, even more so when your dog wants to explore the water.

I meant to grab the flexi leash, but I forgot.

My bad.

Obviously the flexi leash would of came in handy here and my husband wouldn’t of almost been pulled into the water.

Lucky for him he is stronger than Leroy. I should say lucky for me because if Leroy would of pulled him in the water, it somehow would of been my fault.

It would of been hilarious, but it would of been my fault.

For a second I thought about letting Leroy off leash but I am not prepared to do that.

He doesn’t have the best recall.

Fine. He doesn’t have a recall at all.

He is one of those dogs who has selective hearing.

Hello, Leroy. Leroy over here. Leroy!

Which is all the more reason why I should work on a recall with him.

I’ll get on that this summer. Promise.

Until then, I need the flexi leash.

I don’t need one for Sherman. He listens and he’s a delicate ballerina.

We plan to go back to the same spot this weekend.

We will be water adventure prepared this time.

I completely feel you on wanting more water funtime with the pups, as Desmond is not really huge on swimming. And I have definitely been the one with the six-foot leash at the lake. I keep saying I'm going to get one of those ginormous training leads, but then I never get around to it. My hope is that eventually Des will come to love water and then we'll really need that thing!

LOL! I can just see your poor husband trying to keep from going in the water behind an exuberant Leroy.

LOL would have loved to be around for the fun. Great pictures.

We just use a rope for water work. You can buy them inexpensively at the store and they have a clip. Or you can just use a rope tied to the flat collar. Might be better than getting your flexi all wet. They are easier to dry.

Glad I'm not the only one with dogs that have selective hearing when it comes to the whole off leash experience. Dexter is mad for water too and would swim away from me in a flash.

Good for you for getting the boys out and exploring a bit.
