My Garden Drama Continues

I’m sure you have more important things to read other than my garden drama but I have got to get this out.

I need to vent. Just a bit.

Bambi and her family have vacated the premises.

Keep walking pretty lady, I have dog pee and pinwheels.

However, with Bambi gone other creatures have taken it upon themselves to invade my little garden. While the hybrid peeper peppers are coming back nice and strong, the cucumbers and tomatoes took a recent hit.

The suspect,

Peter Frickin Cottontail

Frickin is a harsh word to use when describing a bunny, I know, but this bunny is eating my garden, which makes him the enemy.

While I haven’t caught him red handed yet, I did find his fur on a half eaten cherry tomato and a small cucumber that was chewed up and spit out. The nerve!

I have a feeling that Peter is going to give me a run for money and that it is not going to be as easy to deter him as it was Bambi.

A 2 foot fence has been erected as a temporary barrier.

To top it all off last night when I was watering the garden there was a snake in it! I AM NOT A FAN OF SNAKES!

It had burrowed itself right up along side the foundation of the house and slowly slithered away when the water from my watering can hit him. From what I have read “the mere presence of a dog or cat in the yard, and their associated odors, will often discourage a snake from venturing into your pet’s “territory” Snakes see the household pet as a predator and will prefer to avoid them if possible.”  Really? Cause I have seen a few snakes in my backyard this summer and they don’t seem very deterred by my dogs and my dogs have definitely made their presence known around the garden!

What is a girl and her dogs suppose to do to keep her garden safe?

I'm sorry, I'm no help we have a fenced yard and the deer stay out. We feed the birds so they aren't bothering our few strawberries ( the drought is). Strangely we haven't seen any rabbits this year. Squirrels and a raccoon have been coming up on the deck for the bird seed and the dogs chase them off. The tomatoes, peppers, and cherry tomatoes are doing great, no problem. We have small snakes back near the woods, we just ignore each other unless John gets too close and hollers. The birdseed and Newfs seem to have everything doing well. Hope you get rid of your critters so your garden comes out great :(

I have had friends that have used coyote urine with moderate success, you can get it at most hunting supply stores. Keeps the deer away, too. My Mom's old "trick" was to dust the plants with cayenne pepper powder. The bunnies don't like the strong smell.

I've HEARD that planting marigolds around the perimeter of a garden will keep rabbits out.

For snakes...hmm....you could get a mongoose?

What a cute little frickin' bunny :) My dad lives in San Diego and they eat all of his plants and poop all over his yard, he doesn't think they are cute either!

I've heard that cayenne pepper will help! Those rabbits are bold and stupid. Morgan has plucked tail fur from their tails and they still come back to our yard!
