Do Dogs Hold Grudges?

Do dogs hold grudges?

That’s the question that I’ve been asking myself for the past few days and I’ve come to the conclusion that Leroy is very capable of holding grudges, but he’s the only dog that I currently know of that is. Every dog that I’ve known and read about has always had unconditional love.

Not my Leroy.

He’s currently extremely angry with me and only me.

Now before you get all defensive on Leroy’s behalf, here me out.

So last weekend we had our annual clambake at our house that consists of about 60-70 of our closest friends and family.

We’ve discussed the clambake here before and we’ve also discussed that I’m always a nervous wreck about the dogs because there is so many people and so much food. I’ve struggled in the past with where to keep the dogs during the clambake and last year we had a system that worked pretty well.

Leroy goes in his cage for most of the clambake and Sherman gets to stay with me.

I know it doesn’t seem fair but it really works well because Sherman is like velcro and is always right by my side so I know where he is at all times. Leroy however, is Leroy and is not always by my side and needs to be supervised at all times when we have a party like this because he’s curious, eats garbage, tries to open the door and let himself out, and steals food off of tables.

Believe me, he’s safer in his cage in circumstances like this.

However, some people that were at the clambake felt bad for a Leroy and pleaded with me to let him out a few hours into the party.

Leroy was playin all of them and I kept telling them that but they didn’t believe me, until my husband gave in and let Leroy out and the first thing he tried to do was eat the veggie platter on one of the tables and then went and stuck his head in the garbage to try and eat some clam shells, and then ate some cheese and crackers out of someones bag.

Back in the cage he went and he’s been giving me crap for it ever since.

1. He’s on a hunger strike. He will not eat when I feed him. No matter what I do, if I give him his food he won’t eat it. If Bobby. Gracie or my husband gives him his food, he eats.

2. He’s spitting food at me. I tried to give him a treat the other day and he took it and then spit it back at me and it hit me in the face.

3. Body slams. One day last week he woke me up by body slamming me. Normally he jumps on the bed in the morning and I don’t even feel him. On this day he misguided his jump, or so I thought, and the front half of his body came crashing down on me. Then he did it again. And again. Then I got up because I realized he wasn’t having trouble jumping on the bed, he was trying to kill me.

4. Saturday morning he had a fight with the pillows on the couch outside of my bedroom at 5:30am. He was throwing pillows across the room and howling at them.

5. Sunday morning, the morning where everyone gains an hour of sleep, Leroy howled right in my face, at 5:00 am. Bastard. Then an hour later he wanted to eat, and when I put his bowls down he sat and stared at me, until my husband came over, picked the bowls up and then put them back down. Punk.

So yeah, I’m thinking some dogs do have the capabilities to hold grudges, at least Leroy does.

Oh wow, that brings back memories. I absolutely believe Leroy's having a grudge-fest but he's not alone in his festing. Our very first pup, a Chihuahua, held a grudge like you wouldn't believe (but it was never as dangerous as a Newfie-grudge hah). If Mom refused him anything, he would glare at her all day, every day, for weeks. He would deliberately stalk, stiff legged and offended, in and out of rooms to make sure she saw him shunning her. When we kids messed with him and Dad jokingly said, "Don't be mad, just go leave her a present in her room!" he went straight off and ... left us a stinky present. In our room. Man. I hope he cools off soon! ;)

This is HILARIOUS!!! But Hawk is right on the money. I mean, unless you want to die by Newfie.

Well, I imagine it's not a grudge per se, but I have seen Jasmine get pouty over stuff too. So whatever label one might put on it, I do think it's real.

I guess that, if a dog has a good enough reason, he can hold a grudge. Leroy has good reason :)

I hope he never teaches my dogs his "grudge tricks" like not eating anything *you* give him!
