Sherman Sends A Message

_DSC10021

I’ve had a few people ask me how Sherman was doing with Leroy being sick.

I can assure you that Sherman is doing just fine and was not nearly as affected by Leroy’s illness as we were.

Don’t get me wrong, he was affected…. but not by Leroy’s lack of presence. Sherman was more concerned that we were upset and that the general tone in his home was not of its usual nature.

He knew we were all upset and that I was coming and going more often than normal. He could smell Leroy  on me but he hadn’t seen him in several days.

So yes, he was moderately affected to the point that he gave himself a nice lick sore on the top of his front paws. Sherman does this when he is stressed.

Again, I can assure you it wasn’t sympathy licks for Leroy.

How can I be so sure?

Sherman and Leroy have never been the best of friends.

They have come a long way over the past several years and once in a blue moon you can actually find them laying next to each other or frolicking in the yard. If this ever happens I always try to catch a picture but I’m usually too late.

The frolicking part is very rare and you have to look fast or you might miss it so normally there is no time to capture that moment.

Sherman lives with Leroy because he knows he has no choice. Leroy lives with Sherman to make his life miserable.

I am sure that Sherman enjoyed the 4 days without some huge melon of a dog jumping on his back while he tried to take a drink of water or take a nice long pee.

I say this with pretty much certainty because the night that Leroy came home from the hospital, Sherman walked over to Leroy, gave him a good once over with his nose and then proceeded to hump his head.

“Who’s the top dog now, biatch?” Is what I’m pretty sure he was thinking in his head.

I assume that this is what the non-alpha dog does to the alpha dog when he is recovering from near death and I admit that I laughed a little because Sherman was so gentle about it. You could tell that he didn’t want to hurt him but he also wanted to seize the moment.

His message was delivered and partly received.

I think it was kind of a muted message because Leroy was so incoherent I don’t think he knew it was happening…………but as long as Sherman feels validated now, that’s all that matters.

Ike and Tina are littermates. They are now 4 years old. They tolerate each other. They no longer sleep in the same room, much less the same bed. They don't eat in the same room. Neither one is really aggressive, they just prefer to be separate when they are in the house. Outside it is a whole different story. They run together, bark together, play together. It is like having four dogs instead of two.

I'm sure Sherman thought it felt good to be able to relax, sleep or what ever he felt like with no one around to bother him.

You go Sherman. Jack and Maggie pretty much ignore each other and rarely interact. The most we get is when Maggie tries to climb into bed with Jack - he immediately leaves the bed and they may touch each other in passing and if Maggie has a fish stick, Jack will walk over and just take it away from her...right out of her mouth. I'm glad things are getting back to normal in your household and that Leroy is on the mend.
