I’ve written many time how I implement hill work into Sherman’s exercise.
We started it pretty much as soon as he was recovered from his torn cruciate. It began as a low impact way to build back up his muscle mass in his rear legs.
It was one of the several treatments in his rehabilitation.
We’ve continued it over the years to help keep his muscles strong.
We normally do it 2-3 times a week. More in the Fall and Winter and less in the Summer.
Normally we do hills that are only about 5-7 feet tall and we do it about 4-5 times.
Lately we’ve upped the bar and moved onto a hill that is almost triple that.
It’s a small hill that we pass on our daily walks and it offers a nice grade for Sherman to climb up and climb down in a nice controlled motion.
I’ve been wanting to get a video of it for quite some time but my phone takes really crappy videos. Luckily, I got a new phone a few weeks ago so now I can do a lot more videos! (If you follow us on FB and Instagram you’ve probably already seen an increase in our videos because I’m having a blast with it!)
So this is a video I took yesterday of Sherman coming down the hill.
I couldn’t get him going up because he wouldn’t walk up the hill without me but it give you a could idea of how well he is able to control his motion going down and when he’s going up you can definitely tell that it’s giving his rear leg muscles a nice workout.
He pulled a Sherman (lazy) when I went down the hill to take the video but he got right up and came down when I called to him.

I swear we normally don’t take the time to lay down and enjoy the scenery but Sherman saw his opportunity and laid down with it 😉 Hahahaha.
So what do you think? Not bad for a 9 year old with osteoarthritis, right?
Of course we also have to give credit to our joint supplement, Natural Stride, for playing a very important role in keeping those joints in prime working condition over the last several years..

Good job Sherman.

He's in great shape for a "senior" Newf! Callie did great with her rehab after the first ACL surgery; but seemed to lose a little bit of her confidence with the second one. The first few weeks she was as stubborn as a mule at times. I really had to "push her envelope" at times just so she wouldn't lose her mobility.

Get the rear in gear! So important. Katie has week back leg muscles these days, but the vet said all the work she did on the muscles her whole life really helps her now even though she is weak.

He is such a handsome boy Jen. I'm glad he had recovered and looks to be doing fabulously. I'm sure he likes his one on one time with you too. ;)

Excellent work Sherman. One thing we do with Jack since the downhill can be a little tough is go sideways down the hill at a angle so it's not so steep.

That's a great idea and kind of what Sherman did. I love how with the down hill the have to practice control. Leroy is awful at that!
