Sunday is the day to celebrate all of the amazing mothers in the world. I’m blessed with being a mom to two wonderful children and two wonderful Newfies. The presence of both the kids and the Newfs has made my life anything but dull. It’s challenging, it’s rewarding, it’s amazing. The combination of these things has made my life a true blessing. My children are turning into amazing adults right before my eyes and my Newfies are turning into beautiful senior dogs faster than I could imagine.
Any woman who has a Newfie knows that it’s not a walk in the park to care for these amazing dogs. It takes a ton of work and some days it’s a real struggle but you’ll never hear them complain because in the end they all know that their Newfie is worth every second.
The truth is, a Newfie Mom is amazingly awesome and credit needs to be given where credit is due. On the surface it looks like they simply care for a big dog with a lot of hair but here’s a few other things that Newfie moms do:
Repair Woman. She can take apart any vacuum cleaner, unclog the hair from it and put it back together in less than 10 minutes. Three days a week. All year long. She knows that there is NO vacuum cleaner that can handle Newfie hair without her intervention.
Beauty Stylist. She can wash, dry and trim a 150 pound double coated dog and then turn around and trim her own hair and the hair of her children’s with the same scissors all in one day.
Decorator. She can pick the perfect shade of paint so that dog slobber will blend easily. She can cover her beautiful laminate or tile floors with an array of colorful nonskid throw rugs that brighten up any room. She knows what items can withstand a happy Newfie tail walking by an end table and what items need to go up high.
Chef. She can prepare meals for every member of her family at the same time. All completely balanced and with the ever special condiment of a few sprinkles of dog hair because she can also groom and cook at the same time. No one ever mentions the Newfie hair in her meals because they know better. (Am I the only one who insists on brushing the dog while I cook dinner?)
Chemist. She knows the correct formulation for removing dried slobber off of the walls, what mixture removes vomit best, what works best on urine stains and how to make a rug that was once covered in diarrhea look brand new again.
Problem solver. She knows how to get a 150 pound stubborn dog into the car all by herself without injuring any party involved. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Checks muscles that were given to her by walking this said dog and heaves ho.
Maid. She fills water bowls 50 times a day, vacuums, washes floors, wipes muddy paws, washes floor again, does human laundry and dog laundry, cleans slobber off of walls, trims dingle berries, wipes mouths and still laughs and smiles when her Newf walks through a ginormous mud puddle and up onto her couch.
Taxi Driver. Her car is called the Newfie Mobile for a reason. Not only does it transport groceries and kids it also transports her furry cargo to vet visits, the beach, the park and everywhere in between.
Bodily fluid cleaner upper. Floogers don’t scare her. She actually uses the pinch and flick method often, especially when the slobber towels are in the wash. Urine, diarrhea, vomit and eye boogers don’t stand a chance either. All in a day’s work.
Warrior. Her heart is made of gold and her body is made out of steel. There’s never a question when she comes home from work and bends down for a kiss. Sure it often ends with a bloody nose or fat lip but love wounds heal quickly and the only person she’s worried about impressing is her Newf.
Runway model. The slobber towel hanging out of the back pocket is all the rage these days. It’s the most sought after accessory this Spring. It can even be coordinated to match your outfit. And the dried slobber on her pant leg? It’s suppose to be there.
Wrangler. She wranglers several hundred pounds of dog and multiple kids into one area and has their undivided attention for 15 seconds. She can travel with them AND have every single one come back fully intact.
Friend. A true Newfie mama has a heart almost as big as her Newfie’s heart. She’s always there to lend a hand, a listening ear and offer words of encouragement to fellow Newfie moms. She also has your back and is quick to defend as needed.
Wine/beer taster. She doesn’t need alcohol at the end of a hard day but let’s face it, it helps.
Comedian. Refer to all of the above and keep in mind that her humor is never lost.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Newfie moms out there. Keep on keepin on with your bad ass self and thank you for being the World’s Best Newfie Mom!.
And of course, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms far and wide! Being a mom is the most special gift in the world. Embrace it and enjoy your day, you’ve earned it!
