Dogs That Pick Up Hitchhikers

0051

If you have a Newfie you’ll probably be able to relate to this post very well. If you don’t, there’s a chance you might be a tad grossed out so I’m just letting you in on that now before you read through.

On Monday one of the boys had a hitchhiker.

Not the type of hitchhikers that you see standing on the side of the road trying to bum a ride but more like little creature that hitched a ride on an unsuspecting Newfie.

The hitchhiker can come in many different forms such as inanimate objects or a live creature such as an insect,  arachnid or amphibian. Not to be confused with those life sucking bastards, the tick and flea.

Shudder.

It’s the way of a Newf.

They are attracted to undesirable places to lay outside.

Areas that are dirt filled, housed in spider webs, muddy or just plain gross.

While I don’t have solid proof, I would bet my life that a few spiders have taken a ride in the fur of Sherman and Leroy.

I’m sure a few thousand leggers have also.

I don’t know, it’s just a hunch.

I mean those creatures can get in the house though tiny cracks so I could never blame the boys for bringing a stranger into the house since I’ve never actually witnessed one leaving their body.

I can tell you that I’ve intercepted a few hitchhikers that were trying to hitch a ride on a brown body.

Not on my watch spider!

But those are the times I’ve seen it. Think about all the times that I haven’t!

Well on Monday we had a stranger in the house and while I didn’t actually see the pickup happen, there’s not really another explanation.

This wasn’t a creature that could fit through most cracks or slide in through the window.

He was a little too plump for that.

He was a frog and he was first seen on the bathroom mat.

It’s a totally odd place for a frog to be first thing in the morning, right?

That’s what I thought too.

I didn’t even know he was a frog at first.

He looked like a clump of hair.

And then he looked like a piece of poop.

It wasn’t until I got down on my hands and knees to get a closer look that I realized he had eyes.

And legs.

And he hopped.

What is a frog doing in my bathroom and how did Bobby not step on him when he got out of the shower?

The only logical explanation that we have is that he hitched a ride on one of the dogs.

The clump of brown dog hair that was wrapped around his body was one sign.

And it makes sense because we often see little frogs hopping around in our backyard and Leroy lays right in the area that is most often hopped.

I’m still a little weirded out by it and I would share the picture with you but it’s a crappy cell phone picture and it just looks like a blob. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

The frog was safely transported back outside where I hope he was reunited with his family who I bet were worried sick about him.

I certainly hope his parents have a talk with him about the dangers of hitchhiking.

So how about you? Has your dog ever picked up a hitchhiker? Do tell!

p.s. Am I the only one who pictures a spider crawling in their dogs ear and eating their brain?

Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom

Sunday 30th of October 2016

Hitchhikers don't have a chance in our yard with Shadow and Ducky around! As soon as I let them out the back door, their noses go into overdrive. If there's a critter to be found, one of them will find it with their nose first and then their mouth. UGH! Just the other morning Shadow found a dead mouse and picked it up. I had no idea what it was at first; but she's a good girl. When Mom says "DROP IT!", Shadow drops it. (Ducky is another story.) Anyway, I grabbed the pooper scooper and approached the spot where my GOOD girl had left her treasure and found the poor little dead mouse. I pushed him onto the scooper and dropped him into the poop bucket and closed the lid.

Oh, goodness, I probably would have screamed, just from being shocked there was a frog in my bathroom! Sheba's been bringing a lot of leaves in lately, but luckily nothing alive - knock wood.

Honestly, I think I was more happy that it was a frog than poop ;)

We have a lot of leaves in our house right now too!

Oh my goodness! I would not have liked to see that visitor in my house! Thankfully, Barley only picks up leaves and other things that should stay in the yard, but so far nothing living!

I was quite shocked and if it wouldn't have been for the dog hair, I would still be wondering where he came from!

The only hitchhiker we've had was an extremely unwilling one. Jordan came in from the backyard one night and very proudly deposited a a very slobbery and very scared baby bunny on the ottoman for me. That poor little thing was so traumatized it couldn't move so I picked it up and put it in the other side of the fence. I hope it's mama found it too!

Awwww! That's awesome that he brought it in unharmed! My first Newf use to swallow baby bunnies whole :(
