2016 Holiday Gift Guide For Senior Newfoundlands

I went back and forth about doing a holiday gift guide this year. Sherman and Leroy are at the point where they have all that they need. They have more toys than they know what to do with and with treats, we’re pretty set in our ways. That’s not to say that I’m not getting them anything this Christmas, of course their stockings will be filled, but I’m not searching for the hottest dog gifts this year.  I’m giving the boys things that they need, things that keep them happy and comfortable in their senior years.

So if you have a senior Newfoundland and you’re looking for something similar to fill their stockings with or a few perfect presents for under the tree, here’s some items that might make your list!

A good joint supplement. Hopefully if you have a senior dog you have them on joint supplements already but if you don’t, don’t worry, it’s never to late to start. Sherman and Leroy are both on different joint supplements because of their specific joint needs but our go to supplement that Sherman has been on for several years is Natural Stride.

Dog Ramp. Getting in and out of the car can be hard for a senior Newfoundland because of their aging joints so anything that we can do to make their lives easier, the better. A dog ramp can take a lot of unneeded pressure off of their joints. There’s a lot of dog ramps out there, we use the Solvit Deluxe XL Telescoping Ramp and I love it. It took the boys some time to get use to it but now they don’t get in the car without it.

Massage. You don’t have to be a masseuse to give your dog a massage! Just start massaging. 5-10 minutes a day can really make those aging joints feel better. Take a course or buy a book to learn more about canine massage. Your senior dog will thank you!

Dognition Assessment Subscription. It’s never to late to get to know your dog better. The Dognition Assessment provides a window into your dog’s individual cognitive style — the thinking, learning, and problem-solving strategies that influence much of your dog’s behavior. You’ll play science-based games that assess 5 core dimensions of your dog’s cognition — empathy, communication, cunning, memory, and reasoning. I think this is great for senior dogs because it keeps their mind working! I loved doing this with Leroy and I’m looking forward to doing it with Sherman.

Cooling Pad. It might be Winter in your neck of the woods but a cooling mat is perfect for Newfies in the Summer. Not only does the Green Pet Shop Cooling Pad give a Newfie a cool spot to lay, it’s also good for their joints because it cools and soothes!

ToeGrips.  ToeGrips grab the floor, providing instant traction to help your senior or special needs dog walk without slipping. We haven’t used ToeGrips just yet but we have heard amazing things about them and I know in due time we will be geting some.

K9 III Dog Dryer. This has been on my wishlist for years and Newfie sources say this is the absolute BEST dog dryer. I want it because it will cut down on drying time which is exactly what my senior boys need! The K-9 III dog dryer is the most powerful dryer in the K-9 dryer line up. Two motors, two filters and a whole lot of air flow. A great dog dryer from a great company. TWO MOTORS!

FurBallz. Of course this made our list! It’s been our favorite toy for the last couple of years now. Even senior boys will love this fun toy, as long as they don’t like to de-stuff things! There’s a new multi-colored one too!

Help ‘Em Up HarnessHelp’EmUp Harness with “Hip Lift” is a complete shoulder and hip harness system that literally lifts the lives of aging or recovering dogs! By placing a pair of handles where you can quickly reach them, this dog harness allows you to lend support at any time. Nobody wants to think about it but there’s a good chance your senior Newf will need some assistance as they age. This gives you a safe option to lend them the support they need.

Interactive Puzzles. Keeping a senior dog’s brain active is highly recommended that’s why we love interactive puzzles. There’s a ton available put we are fans of the Nina Ottosson line of puzzles.

Have anything else to add to our list? Tell us about it!

p.s. You guys, I finally did it. We have our very first My Brown Newfies Calendar available right now! Over the years I’ve been asked several times to create a calendar with some of YOUR favorite pictures of Sherman and Leroy so I finally did the deed! You can check it out HERE if you’re interested. We’ll slowly be adding new things to our shop so if you would like to see something in there, let me know!

Those are some great ideas, Jen! I've already taken a massage course - one of the continuing ed courses from my vet assistant school - but I need to go back to it for a refresher. A friend is baking dog treats for the girls and shipping them to me soon.

You forgot the slobber towel that is a necessity for any aged Newfie! Bailie now has a Newf in her nose work class. He always has to search last as his slobber gives away the hide placement!

Lol. That made me laughed so hard about the Newfie going last because of the slobber! Makes perfect sense!

My spoiled senior newfies are getting a meat grinder (they got a Vitamin mixer last year, cannot live without their smoothies) Santa might also bring some fur Balls but only if they are not naughty.

Me too. I've been wanting one for quite a while now! It dries 50% faster than the one I have right now!
