September is here and I can officially start talking about fall.

Seriously, you guys said I could start talking about it after September 1st and it’s now September 12th so I’m actually late.

Anyhow, fall is a tricky time of year here in Ohio.

Last week we had record-setting temperatures in the mid 90’s and by the weekend we had a high of 55 degrees.

This week looks like it will be more of the same.

Summer hasn’t left and I know we’ll have a lot more days ahead of heat and humidity but pumpkin is out in full force and it’s on sale so now is the perfect time to take advantage of it!

DIY frozen pumpkin dog treats

I was looking for an easy fall treat that I could make for Sherman and Leroy but that’s tricky since Leroy has IBD.

Introducing anything new to his diet is always a risk so I’m very limited on what I can make for him.

There’s basically a handful of things he does well on and a few of those are plain potato flakes, pumpkin, green beans, and his prescription food.

That doesn’t give me much to work with but I decided to try and combine a few of those things and see what would happen.

I was pleasantly surprised with the results and so were Sherman and Leroy!

These frosty pumpkin dog treats are so easy to make and you can easily customize them to fit your dog’s diet.

I made them low-fat and high fiber for Leroy, and for Sherman, I increased the protein a bit and added bone broth.

Ingredients for easy to make frosty pumpkin dog treats:
  • 1-2 cans of plain pumpkin
  • water
  • frozen green beans
  • your choice of other ingredients. I used potato flakes for Leroy and beef bone broth for Sherman.
  • optional-fat-free whipped cream
Directions for frozen pumpkin dog treats:

This is a pretty easy to do recipe and you can do it however you choose.

I did ours 4 different ways.

For some, I just spooned the canned pumpkin into the silicone molds, placed the green bean, and froze.

If you’re looking for a thinner consistency you can add a few tablespoons of water to the pumpkin. I actually preferred it this way because it froze better.

First, add about a tablespoon of your chosen ingredient to the bottom of the silicone mold, then add your canned pumpkin, place the frozen green bean in the pumpkin mixture and freeze!

I made about 10 of these and placed them on a cookie sheet and froze for about 4 hours.

Then store in a freezer bag or airtight container for about a month.

I’m going to be honest, when I started making these frosty pumpkin dog treats

I wasn’t thinking of making them look like a pumpkin but as soon as I opened the freezer 4 hours later I thought, “Ha! They look like mini pumpkins!”

These frosty pumpkin dog treats are a perfect snack on a warm fall day and they’ll also make a great special treat on Thanksgiving!

I made some plain pumpkin ones and then I made some special ones for Leroy using about a half a cup of plain potato flakes that I hydrated with water.

For Sherman’s treats, I used Primal Beef Bone Broth.

My Golden Life

Thursday 13th of September 2018

They look yummy enough for us humans, except that hubby and I don't like pumpkin. As decorations, they're fine but that's where it ends for us. And even the slightest bit of pumpkin loosens the girls' bms. Oh well. Each dog is different. Glad your boys can enjoy those treats!!

Brilliant! Since summer isn't giving up easily here either, I will need to make these babies up as inspiration to remind me that hot temps are nearly over. Stay cool.
