12 Years Of Life With Sherman

Today we celebrate Sherman’s 12th birthday and I always have a hard time with a birthday post for him because words fail me when it comes to the best Newfie EVER.

He’s my heart dog.

Sherman was the dog that I wanted not only as our family dog but also as my dog.

Selfishly, I wanted him more for me.

Not only has he been my children’s childhood dog but he has also been my rock.

He has been with me since my daughter was 2 and my son was 5.

He has gotten me through some tough times of motherhood.

He gave me the breaks that I needed and he always watched over every single one of us.

If something wasn’t right, Sherman would let us know.

If the kids were being too rowdy, he would let them know by standing in between them.

12 years ago I made a promise to Sherman to give him the best and longest possible life that I could.

I promised I would do better, know better and learn as much as I could to give him a good life.

When Sherman turned 9, I celebrated. He was my longest living Newf to date.

When Sherman turned 10 it was a celebration. Double digits!

When Sherman turned 11 I was elated but that year he had shown signs of slowing down and I started thinking that every season might be his last so I did all I could to make that time enjoyable.

Today he is 12 and while he’s slower than he was last year, he’s seen more seasons and he’ll see another winter.

Sherman was there when my daughter started walking and he used to help her get around the house.

Last week, Sherman was struggling to make the last step and my daughter was behind him guiding and encouraging him.

It was one of the sweetest things that I have ever seen and my heart melted.

Sherman has been helping to take care of our family for 12 years and now it’s time we take care of him.

He’s is 12 years old today. He’s not 12 years young and I know that.

He’s my handsome old man and I’m proud of that.

I’m beyond blessed to have him here with us still every day and not an hour is taken for granted.

Happy Birthday my handsome man.

We love you to the moon and back.

Happy birthday, Sherman! I'm so glad you've had so much time with him, and I wish him more birthdays!

We just lost our Glory at the beginning of September. She was not quite 10 1/2. We got to have that much time with her -- the best time of my life.

I know you cherish every moment with Sherman and Leroy. Just love them. There can never be "enough" time, so love them for every moment that you have. I'm glad they are yours and that you are theirs.

Best birthday wishes!
