20+ Perfect Newfoundland Dog Names

So you got your first, second or third Newfoundland!

Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of Newfies!

Your life will never be the same again and that’s a good thing!

But before we get too involved with the new Newfie Lifestyle that you just became apart of, first you need to find the perfect name for this amazing dog of yours!

Picking out a name for your Newfoundland can be a daunting task.

I’ve been there and I still have the long list of names to prove it!

Choosing a Name For Your Newfoundland

Some people choose a name for their Newfoundland before that Newfie ever enters their life and some wait until they can get to know the little fluff ball a little better.

Sherman was named before we met him.

I had seen a gorgeous Mastiff at a dog show once and his name was Sherman and I fell in love with that name.

For Leroy, we decided to not pick a name for him until we met him.

I wanted to name him something that fit his personality so for the first few days we called him, “No.”

Quite fitting if you ask me!

He was such a little furry monster it only took a few days to come up with Badd Badd Leroy Brown.

Odin came with his name and we just left it because it seemed to fit his personality.

I honestly don’t think that there is any right or wrong way to pick a name for your Newfie and I don’t think there are any bad names out there!

Things To Keep In Mind When Picking a Name For Your Newfoundland

When you’re going through a long list of Newfoundland dog names keep in mind a few things about the Newfie breed in general.

They are big, strong, sweet dogs so almost any name will fit them!

Any Greek God or Goddess name will work!

Short names flow off the tongue easier.

Picture yourself calling their name a hundred times a day.

And also make sure the name will fit on their drool bib!

Lou’s puppy bib is from Etsy

Does it flow easily under any circumstance?

Do the nickname test!

Can you easily add a nickname?

Every Newfie deserves at least 3 nicknames!

We named our most recent Newfie Lou.

He’s named after the brown Newfie in Police Academy 2.

Nicknames we already have for him are Lou Bear, Lou Lou (which I swore I would never call him) Booger and Scooby Lou.
