How Much Does It Cost To Get a Newfoundland Groomed?

If you’re trying to determine if getting a Newfie is the right breed for you and their high grooming maintenance has you concerned, you can expect to pay about $100-$200 to have them groomed by a professional dog groomer.   

So, you think you want a Newfie which is great!

Newfies are a very special and unique breed and very close to my heart. 

Not only is this breed loving, devoted and kind but they’re also super furry!

Their waterproof double coat is pretty high maintenance and requires a lot of love, TLC and brushing. 

They shed pretty much 24/7 but they massively blow their coat twice a year. 

A major decision new Newfie owners have to make when they bring home their new fluffball or adopt an adult Newfie is how they’re going to handle their grooming needs. 

No matter what, you’ll have to brush and comb your Newfie weekly but most Newfies need to be bathed and trimmed about every 6-8 weeks. 

The bathing really depends on the lifestyle of the Newf but the trimming is a necessity to keep them looking their best. 

If trimming isn’t something you want to tackle, you’ll want to find a professional dog groomer in your area that is familiar with the breed. 

The cost of taking your Newfoundland will vary based on several things including where you live, the size of your Newfie, the shape of your Newfie’s coat and other services your Newfie needs done. 

Since I do all of our grooming at home, I’m not familiar with the current costs of taking your Newfoundland to a groomer but I took a poll on Instagram and the feedback was great!

Basically, across the country and including Canada the average grooming was between $100-$200 + TIP. 

Let’s break it down a little bit more.

East Coast Newfoundland Dog Groomer Price

I’m going to break it down into East and West Coast to make it easier. 

The East Coast will include the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast. (don’t come at me for my East/West Coast line. I did what I did the easiest way I could)

For the East Coast we had Newfie owners from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Maine, Wisconsin, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana chiming in. 

Average Grooming Cost for East Coast

The average cost seemed to be right around $100-$200 and tips were and were not included in some of those responses. 

It seemed that $130 & $140 were the most common prices with $95  being the least expensive. 

Grooming Services 

Most people responded that this cost included:

• bath
• blowout
• basic trim (ears & toes)
• nails

Additional grooming services included anal gland expression, full trim or outline trim, ear cleaning. 

Grooming Frequency

Most owners responded that they took their Newfie to the groomer about every 4-6 weeks. 

A few responded with 8 weeks.

Average Grooming Cost For West Coast

The average grooming cost for our West Coast friends was a little higher but still in the $200 range.

$150 and $180 were the most common prices. 

We had responses from Oregon, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oklahoma, Montana, Colorado and Utah. 

The least expensive was $80 which included a bath, blow out and nail trim. 

The same frequency was reported along with the same services performed as the East Coast. 

Unfortunately I didn’t have any responses from California or Texas. 

Average Grooming Cost For Canada

Our friends across the pond seem to spend a little more on professional grooming but it includes everything. 

The average grooming cost for Canada was $200-$250 + TIP (USD)

This was for full grooms but the frequency was less because all the Canadian owners that responded said they do maintenance grooming in between sessions. 

So they are visiting the groomers on average about  2-3 times per year. 

How Often Should You Have Your Newfoundland Groomed?

How often you take your Newfie to the groomer depends on a few things.

Newfies that spend a lot of time in the water, like to get down and dirty in the mud or Newfies that are therapy dogs, will require more baths. 

Newfies that have skin issues or other medical issues, might need to be groomed more frequently. 

Senior Newfies and puppies might also require a different grooming schedule. 

And if you’re meeting some of your Newfoundland’s grooming needs at home, they might not have to make as many trips to the groomers. 

Why Is Your Groomer Charging More?

If you’re wondering why your groomer is charging out of the $100-$200 range, you should definitely reach out to them and ask. 

Most groomers will charge for their time so if your dog has a lot of mats, they might charge a higher fee. 

Some groomers may also increase the price for uncooperative dogs which is why it’s important to make sure your Newfie is comfortable with being groomed. 

I know, I know. 

That’s defeating the purpose but you really are doing a disservice to your dog and your groomer if you’re not working with them!

Should You Tip Your Dog Groomer?

Yes. 

Definitely yes.

The general rule of thumb is to tip dog groomers 15-20%.

If you’re happy with the services that were performed, you should definitely tip them graciously but also within your budget. 

Most dog groomers are considered a small business and they are providing a valuable service to you and your dog, you should definitely acknowledge their work!

How To Choose a Dog Groomer For Your Newfie

Choosing a dog groomer for your Newfie is almost as important as finding a good veterinarian to care for them. 

Just like most things, not all dog groomers are created equal so you’ll definitely want to spend some time researching groomers in your area. 

Once you narrow the search down you’ll also want to ask them these important 12 questions. 

Conclusion

Grooming is definitely one of the many expenses of owning a Newfie and it should be taken into consideration when you’re deciding if a Newfie is the right breed for you and your family. 

If you plan to take your Newfoundland to a professional groomer you should plan on spending roughly $2,400 a year. 

If you plan on grooming your Newfie at home, you should still keep in mind that you’ll have to spend a decent amount of money on numerous grooming tools.
